It also has one observer from each Åland, Faroe Islands and Greenland. Board meeting is held twice a year. The secretariat rotates between the member countries. Chairmanship: Norway

2 Evaluation continously by the Officials Committee for Fishery, Agriculture, Food and Forestry (EK-FJLS) under the Nordic Council of Ministers Financing: Nordic Council of Ministers C SNS CAR A network with a specified core of scientific subject, in a decentralised manner. 5 years. Network A research network is funded for 1-2 years Project Based upon a co-ordination of ongoing national research and at least three Nordic countries. Scholarship Encourage education and knowledge exchange NOK/person.

3 CAR Network Project Longer time networking in the Nordic region and adjacent areas. It initiates and coordinates research to enhance synergies in the area. Arranges workshops. SNS-NKJ networks Cross-sectorial networking between agriculture and forestry, addressing challenges emerging from the transition towards a bioeconomy SEK/per year for 1-2 years. Next call: January 2019 Research projects should relate to the prioritised themes of the SNS strategy, such as forestry within bioeconomy, climate and social aspects SEK/year for 5 years. 6 STRATEGY emphasis will be placed on the following strategic areas: q Meeting the demandsofsustainable forest management in a growing bioeconomy. q Maintenance and increased utilisation of ecosystem services. q Climate change adaptation and mitigation.

7 Five main tools will be used to address the strategic focus areas: Promoting and funding forest research collaborations and networking activities. Improve gender equality and social inclusion, ensuring that equality becomes a regular feature of work in the Nordic forest sector. Strengthen forest research and interdisciplinary collaborations in Nordic, as well as Nordic Baltic, European and international contexts. Provide policy advice to the Nordic countries and the Nordic Council of Ministers based on forest research. Communicate reliable, relevant and current research results and policy advice to other identified target groups.

8 These are a few examples of the SNS contribution to a more sustainable forestry in the Nordic countries: Reduce climate change Research projectstrives to reduce negative impact of forestry on emission of greenhouse gases. New market for wood products Paper is old new fields are opening for all components of wood. One projects developes novel applicationsfor wood polysaccharides. Climate change and globalization New threats to the forests emerges due to increased international trade of plants and plant products, and the changes in climate.
