2 What is Woodpolis? Established in 2006, Woodpolis is a city-owned expert organisation promoting timber construction development and maintaining and supporting a learning environment. Its aim is to promote woodworking businesses by developing secondary production innovations for timber construction together with companies and other partners. Woodpolis works at the forefront to develop innovations for ecological construction in cooperation with companies. Woodpolis develops and organises training courses in woodworking and timber construction on its own and also in cooperation with educational establishments. Woodpolis governs the only training factory in Finland, serving for innovative timber construction and training and complying with actual manufacturing requirements. History The roots of Woodpolis lie in high-quality raw materials from the Kainuu region, developing and growing companies and supporting long-term development work of the city of Kuhmo. As early as in 1992, Kuhmo started a determined development effort to promote the wood-processing industry by establishing the Kainuu Wood Processing Development Centre (KPKKP). Woodpolis has continued that work since

3 Training evironment Companies belonging to Kantola Timber Cluster have modern woodworking environment with high-quality machinery, installations and software (CAD/CAM) available for companies and educational institutions for training and product-development purposes. Training environment offers a whole range of opportunities for companies just starting up or those striving for further development. We organise tailored training courses to meet companies needs. Courses take place in a real manufacturing environment. If your company has further training needs, please contact Woodpolis Service Manager. The training environment can house courses on 3D design, CAD and CAM engineering, finger-jointing techniques of timber, timber seasoning, surface treatment, wood- planing and planing-cutter techniques along with cutter maintenance. Training environment offers versatile possibilities for product development The woodworking CNC machine center allows processing of up to 12-metre-long straight and arched glulam beams and CLT elements. The working area of the machining centre is metres, which makes it possible to work large and multi-shaped pieces, such as wooden structures for blocks of flats and other large buildings. 6 Bio energy in Kuhmo Kuhmo excels in its energy efficiency and use of bio energy The volume of heat and electricity produced within the industrial zone of Kuhmo substantially exceeds its requirements, which allows a great part of it to be distributed to other local consumers. Energy is produced from by-products of the Kuhmo Oy sawmill: bark and sawdust. In global terms, and considering the size of this industrial zone, we are talking about significant levels of energy production. More than 60% of the energy used in Kuhmo is produced using renewable energy sources The energy production in Kuhmon Lämpö Oy relies solely on by-products of the Kuhmo Oy sawmill. The sawdust and bark remaining from the manufacturing process are utilised for the production of heat and electricity. One can argue that bio-economy was introduced in Kuhmo way before there was a word for it. In 2010, the timber cluster companies of the Kantola industrial zone produced nearly 80 GWh more energy than they consumed. In monetary terms, this is equivalent to a couple of million euro per year. The area also supplied fuel chips and briquettes with an energy content of 145 GWh, which is utilised elsewhere, mostly outside Kuhmo. The energy content gained from the by-products of the manufacturing processes of the timber companies in the Kantola area is approximately three times greater than the amount of energy they consumed.the heating plant Kuhmon Lämpö Oy, owned by the city of Kuhmo and Kuhmo Oy, runs solely on bio-based sources of energy. Kuhmo s environmental programme is pioneering in the reduction of its the carbon footprint. A positive energy balance is significant for the attractiveness of the industrial zone. The timber cluster will make good use of this achievement in the future when a comprehensive plan for the area is being drafted.
