ALTO SHAMBOYACU PROJECT SAN MARTIN REGION, PERU P R O G R E S S R E P O R T, D E C Septembre 2010

ALTO SHAMBOYACU REFORESTATION PROJECT Context and objectives Alto Shamboyacu MAIN THEMES Develop agroforestry model programs to produce a coffee of excellent quality while improving yields and preserving the quality of soil, water and biodiversity Strengthen community participation and empowerment of native Indians Biodiversité Agroécologie Mitigation climatique Souveraineté alimentaire Culture Support the cooperative with the integration of new sustainable and diversified activities: extraction of seeds, beekeeping, crop diversification, timber management... Adaptation climatique Développement économique Emancipation des communautés SPECIFIC CONTEXT During the 80s, Peru experienced a strong expansion of illicit coca cultivation and saw many Amazonian regions being ruled by drug traffic. Lamas is one of the areas severely affected by this disastrous phenomenon. Oro Verde cooperative was created in this context. Originally, a producers group mobilizes to develop alternatives cultivations and thus enhance their greatest asset: coffee. The bigger half of the Lamas territory is still covered with primary intact rainforest. To preserve it, it is necessary to increase the productivity of coffee, and so reduce the pressure on natural areas. It is what the cooperative apply itself to doing, including an important part of training and support for coffee growers. 2 KEY ELEMENTS Type : Agroforestry Partner : ORO VERDE Coopérative Participants: 900 Fair trade & Organic coffee farmers Status in Sept 2013: 429,385 planted trees Potential : 650,000 planted trees by 2014 Products : trees, VCUs Certification: VCS validation by 2014

LOCATION San Martin region: deforestation rate of 1,17 % per year An area heavily deforested by illegal production of coca in the 1980s. A still alarming deforestation rate (1.17% / year) and increasing to the benefit of intensive agriculture and illegal or disrespectful loggers of the principles of sustainable management of this resource. Multiple stakes: global climate (aridification), agricultural production, water regulation, biodiversity, food sovereignty. 61 villages and native communities splitted over 5 provinces: Lamas, El Dorado, Pongo, Rioja, Roque 5

PLANTATIONS ACHIEVED 4 plantation models MODEL 1 Plantations on damaged or unused land MODEL 2 Agroforestry: plantations intercropped with coffee trees 6

PLANTATIONS ACHIEVED Species and characteristics The choice of the planted species depends on the specific conditions of the site of plantation and the expected impact in the various agro-forestry or forestry systems developed: timber production, shade, soils improvement, etc. Use of native species mainly.

LOCAL COORDINATION Oro Verde cooperative ORO VERDE cooperative provides technical help on organic production and maintenance of plantations to each farmer involved in the project. Agronomists visit each community every month and each individual farmer at least twice a year. Their mission consist in training the farmers to the techniques of tree plantation, to the maintenance of planted trees, to various forestry activities and to the good maintenance of their parcel. They are key persons for the sustainable development of the project, they keep in constant touch with the farmers. They also provide every month training to some specific advanced skills: climate change, carbon sequestration, deforestation, agroforestry techniques They finally coordinate the project monitoring work: distribution of trees, check-up and follow-up of planted trees, GPS recording, measurement of trees growth 9

PARTICIPANTS 900 Fair trade and sustainable coffee producers Members of the cooperative ORO VERDE, which gathers farmers from ancient Andean and native communities (Kechuas, Awajun) together, maintain their cultural identity and native language, manufacture and use traditional textiles, collectively manage their territory villages and communities are involved: coffee commitees and 21 cocoa committees (though some farmers grow both coffee and cocoa). Relatively disadvantaged communities, mainly small scale producers of coffee and cocoa who own 2 to 5 hectares of land, of which 0.5 to 3 hectares are cultivated. 11

CARBON CERTIFICATION Preparation for VCS validation Documentation, improved monitoring and strong field work to reach the VCS validation in VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) is the best recognised standard on the market of voluntary carbon offset for forestry projects. VCS gives criteria for the validation, measurement and management of carbon offsetting projects.
