1 Revision Date: 0-0- Stand Examiner: Richard Barber Legal Description: TN R0E Sec Compartment Review Presentation Atlanta Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County Cheboygan Management Area: Cheboygan Basin Moraines Identified Planning Goals: Multiple resource management, with the primary emphasis being recreation. Soil and topography: The topography of the compartment is mostly rolling with a steep bluff along the shore line of Black Lake. Soils are a mix of sands and gravel. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: The lands to the east and west of the compartment are private resort and recreational ownership. The lands to the north are mostly state owned and are part of the Black Mountain Recreation Area. Unique Natural Features: One or more reported. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: One or more reported. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Black Lake BAS is located within this compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment is an excellent opportunity to manage for wildlife. It is part of a multiple compartment, large scale block of public land providing contiguous wildlife pathways that are necessary for many of our large game animals such as black bear. Habitat components of oak, aspen and pine provide food and cover for multiple species at a variety of age classes. We are working to maintain mast producing trees as well as keep a good age rotation of aspen in this compartment with consideration of adjacent compartments. Species which benefit from our management include white-tailed deer, black bear, ruffed grouse, woodcock, and many other game and non-game species. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions The state-owned Doriva Beach Pit is located in the compartment. It is not currently leased. There should be potential for additional sand & gravel within the compartment. There does not appear to be any bedrock non-metallic mineral potential. There has been no drilling for oil & gas in this area and there is currently no known potential. There are no active mineral leases in the area. There is no known metallic mineral potential in this part of the state. Vehicle Access: Access is very good. Survey Needs: None have been identified. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Black Lake State Forest Campground, Black Lake BAS, ORV trails, a snowmobile trail, hunting, and fishing. Fire Protection: Fire response is covered by the Onaway DNR office as well as the Ocqueoc/ Bearinger VFD. Additional Compartment Information: 0/0/0 :: PM - Page of SWARTZN
