Federal Forest Agency NORTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF FORESTRY Natalia Demidova, Forest Sector Task Force of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council Meeting, Luleå, Sweden May, 2011

Northern Research Institute of Forestry was created on the 26th of December 1958

Institute structure Forest Management Laboratory, which consists of 2 Sectors (Forest Economics and Management; Reforestation); Taiga Silviculture and Biodiversity Laboratory which consists of 3 Sectors (Silviculture and Forestry; Forest Protection; Biodiversity); Vologda Regional Laboratory (Vologda City); Northern Experimental Station, situated in the countryside of Arkhangelsk Region, Dendrological Garden (Arkhangelsk).

The institute is situated in Arkhangelsk ( ` north, 39 40` east). The sphere of the Institute activity is the Northern economic area (Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions, Komi Republic).

The main directions of research (1): forest management; natural and artificial regeneration; methods of forest harvesting; forest taxation; biodiversity conservation; forest policy matters; pre-tundra silviculture; monitoring of northern forests; forest certification;

The main directions of research (2): forest genetics and breeding; forest ecology; tree species introduction; small fruit-berry plant breeding (sea buckthorn, rose hip); forest land remediation; Model Forests development; forest ecological exploitation in conditions of intensive anthropogenous influence; international co-operation in forestry.

Recommendations for the natural regeneration by coniferous species in the process of wood logging in the forests of North European part of Russia. Silviculture

«Technology and Forestry Requirements for the main felling using multioperational machines» is widely used in the North of Russia

Artificial Regeneration Technologies creation of artificial plantations of valuable tree species in different site conditions of the North, which allow: to prevent species change; to increase forest productivity by 15-20%; to reduce harvesting rotations in 1,5-1,7 times; to avoid costly forest tending.

Growing of planting material Recommendations and Process Maps for Pine and Spruce Seedlings Growing in Northern and Middle Taiga Subzones of the European Part of Russia are used in 18 lesnichestvo of Arkhangelsk and Vologda Regions, Komi Republic; High technology of containerized seedlings production; The technology of large-sized seedlings growing.

Forest Breeding and Seed Signal indications for early forecast methods in forest breeding; Recommendations on permanent forest seed plantation of pine and spruce creation; Clarification of forest seed zoning of pine, spruce and larch. Production

Forest Taxation and Inventory Manual of forest taxation regulations. Growth models of indigenous and secondary forests of the European North of Russia. Justification of the age of maturity (biological, technical, economic) and the main cutting of forests for various purposes.

Justification of the southern boundary of pre-tundra forests; Creating a system of forest management in pretundra forests; Monitoring pretundra forests in impacted zones. Pre-tundra silviculture

Technology of ameliorated systems. Models for growth and productivity forecast on drained forest. Methods and criteria for evaluating the effectiveness forest amelioration. Felling rules in drained forests. Guidelines for management in drained forests. Forest Amelioration

Dendrological Garden 586 woody tree species, 83 genus 29 families, represented by 1135 samples (6376 plants) of different geographical origin from Europe, Siberia, Far East, Middle Asia, North America. Near 50 ha of Pinus contorta experimental plantations on Arkhangelsk, Vologda Regions and Komi Republic. 12 hybrid forms of Hippophae rhamnoides with high winter hardiness were selected.

Projects with local institutions Forest Plan of Arkhangelsk Region Development. Dept. of Forest Complex of Arkhangelsk Regional Administration. Forest Regulations Development (for 16 forest management enterprises lesnichestvo ). Dept. of Forest Complex of Arkhangelsk Regional Administration.

International projects Northern Coniferous Forests Tools through research for the sustainable use of forests in the Barents Region. Kolaric Programme The overall objective of this project is to apply cross-border joint research focusing on pristine forest areas in order to obtain indepth knowledge supporting the sustainable use of forests in the Barents region and knowledge that can be applied in preventing conflicts related to the use of fragile subarctic northern forests (METLA).

Wood Bark and Peat as Raw Materials for Bioactive Compounds and Specialty Chemicals: from Innovations to Applications ( ForestSpeCs ). EU project (FP7) The aim: to utilize different type of wood residues from wood processing industry such as bark of various species, especially from Betula, Pinus, Picea, Larix and Populus, seeds, as well as peat as a raw material to produce the bioactive compounds and environmentally benign specialty chemicals.

Meeting of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council s Working Group on Environment (October 6-9, 2009) and VI International Contact Forum on Habitat Conservation in the Barents Euro- Arctic Region (May 31 - June 5, 2010 Arkhangelsk), supported the initiative to create network of the Botanic Gardens of Barents Euro Arctic Region. The First Meeting of Representatives of Botanical Gardens in the Barents Euro / Arctic Region on September 9-10, 2010.

Kolaric Programme Call for (application) Northern Landscape Management Platform (Northlamp) Project (Finland, Sweden, NW of Russia). Network of Botanical gardens and Arboreta in the Barents region Network of Plant Biodiversity (BIOBAR) (Finland, Sweden, NW of Russia).

Key areas for a future Action Plan for FSTF in Barents Region Partnership development; The development and application of sustainable forest management; Knowledge sharing and extension linkages; Support for projects and initiatives

NRIF proposals for the cooperation Development of a comprehensive monitoring system of boreal forests. Assessing the environmental and wood resources potentiality of the forests. Multipurpose use of forest recourses (nonwood forest products). Scientific study the problem of large-scale forests mortality in the area between the Northern Dvina and Pinega Rivers.

Low-quality wood and wood-waste utilization in the production of biofuel. Development of energy efficient technologies and alternative fuels and energy. Wood-waste (such as bark of various species) utilization as a raw material component for non-traditional fertilizers.

Economic valuation of renewable natural resources as a tool for planning of natural resources utilization. The impact of climate change on forest management. (Ecosystems and forest resources use under climate change). Provision the economic viability of forestry.

Natural and artificial reforestation. Production of containerized seedlings in Barents Region. Seed production and forest genetics. Technology of forest stands cultivation with controlled properties.
