The written history of Paulowniaa is found in writing that date back some 3,000 years. They describedd how to grow, and uses of wood. The author Zhuang Tze (400 B.C.) stated the Phoenix flew from the sea of the North to the sea of the South without alighting on any but Paulownia. TOSA, ELONGATA AND 1. - ELONGATA is the most widely planted speciee of Paulownia in Mexico. because of its good growth rate and greater cold tolerant than most species. Today. This is 2. - FORTUNEI is the fastest growing of all the species. Its growth rate is slightly faster than Elongata. Fortunei also has a better form than Elongata and Tomentosa. However, it s not as cold tolerant as the Elongata and Tomentosa. Fortunei is the best choice for areas that have a more temperatee climate TOMENTOSA is the specie introduced to the U.S. In the 1850 s it grows in the wild in many parts of the country. Its growth rate is somewhat slower than Elongata and Fortunei and the form is also not as good as the other two. The one major desired characteristic of Tomentosa is that it is more cold tolerant. Growth & Ecology Growing Trees up to 6 m. in the 1st year Alone and can reach 12 meters at the end of 3rd growing season. Blossoming Paulownia will blossom for 6 weeks in spring. Temperature Range Paulownia can adapt to a wide range of temperatures. Most species are known to withstand temperatures of -10 to 40 degrees C. Soil conditions Well drained is best but light to heavy clay is OK. Root system Paulownia has multiple tap roots from 4-6 meters deep.

THE PAULOWNIA TREES REGENERATES: Its growth for over 200 years after its first cutting; how to raise cattle, seed and harvest grains pastures and forages between the paulownia trees 3. LIGHTWEIGHT: Paulownia is about 2/3 the weight of the lightest commercial wood grown in the world. Average cubic foot weight varies 15 to 19 this falls between Balsa wood and Poplar. Paulownia is 1/3 the weight of Oak (44 lbs p/cubic ft) and half the weight of Pine (30 lbs p/cubic ft). The specific gravity of Paulownia ranges between 0.23 to 0.30 (23 to 30% of the density of water) STRENGTH: Balsa has been considered to have the highest strength to weight ratios of any wood in the world. Paulownia has been tested to have a higher strength to weight ratio than Balsa. Tang, Auburn University 5. - PAULOWNIA OFFERS: Some Balsa core material is sliced at 3/8 inch with end-grained material. Paulownia could be cut at 3/16 and offer approximately the same strength and weight Paulownia offers-2: A space saving benefit, being cut half as thick. There is also a significant cost savings because half as much material would need to be purchased. When considering the large amount of epoxy that Balsa soaks up, Paulownia gains an even larger weight advantage PAULOWNIA DOES NOT SPLIT: Paulownia holds nails and screws well and does not require pilot to be drilled. WORKABILITY: Paulownia has been widely used in the orient for constructing fine furniture, musical instruments, carvings and decorative finishes for over 1000 years. It can be peeled for veneer in 1/16 inch thickness and has even been sliced at 1/32 inch. Intricate patterns can be cut with a jig saw or band saw without splitting easily Paulownia has been a favorite for many carvers in the world Furniture s, doors and windows can be made with close tolerances. 7 9.- STABILITY: Air drying takes as little as 30 days. Boards can be kiln dried at high temperatures in as little as 24 hours to 10 to 12% moisture content with no warping. Reported shrinkage from green to oven dry is only 2.2% radial and 4.0% tangential. Paulownia remains stable during changes in humidity and experiences little shrinkage or expansion compared to most all the wood. It is highly durable and resists decay under nonground contact conditions. The wood is insect resistant. 10. CONDUCTIVITY: Paulownia is a very good insulator. Paulownia log homes are said to have twice the R factor as pine or oak logs. This temperature resistance serves to give the wood a high fire resistance. Ignition temperature is approximately 400 deg. C. which is almost twice as much as conventional hard and soft woods. 11. ATTRACTIVENESS: Paulownia has a light blond appearance and resembles White Ash. It stains well with a variety of colors and can be made to mimic other woods. Once planed a silky luster is revealed. The feel is also very silky.
