Dutch agriculture: key figures Economic significance of the AgriFood complex: 10% of employment fte Added value: 52 billion (9,5% GDP) Livestock: 26 billion Horticulture: 6 billion Forestry 4 billion* Export Value: 82billon (19%, 2015), 76% within EU Agriculture in the Netherlands Ca SMEs Wageningen University and Research 6

Agricultural policies Production is at high level Educational level of a farmer = university (World) Market driven Innovation Sustainability More efficiency ( more crop per drop ) / less fertilizer / less pesticides / Niche markets Common Agricultural Policy 8

Land Use in the Netherlands Nature (ca 10%) Wetlands Forests and cultivated lands Agricultural use (55%) Western part: urban dominated Mainly sub sea level Peatland; Veen-weide gebied Northern part Pasture dominated South and East Sand and (river) clay Forest and moorland 10

Land Use Characteristics Cultivated organic soils important source of CO 2 emissions in the Netherlands About 290,000 ha (or 6% of the total land area) 223,000 ha under agricultural land use: permanent pastures for dairy farming improved drainage and bearing capacity of the pastures in large areas ditch water levels are lowered Forested area ha (9.6% of total land area). Originally: wood production main purpose. Since 1970s: multi-purpose forests (e.g. nature, recreation), managed according to Sustainable Forest Management principles. 11

Forestry policies Forest policy = integrated into the nature policy multi-purpose forests in which more functions are combined (e.g. nature, recreation). development of a nature network Influences: afforestation and reforestation will also contribute to increasing removals from LULUCF 12

Forestry 10% of the total surface covered by forests (375,000 ha), almost all managed according to the principles of Sustainable Forest Management Two acts ensure SFM: Forest Act contains the obligation to report felling activities and to replant within three years of felling Flora and Fauna Act ensures that the negative consequences of (management) activities on biodiversity are minimised Forestry integrated in National Nature Network 560,000 ha in 2011; additional 80,000 ha by 2027 No specific afforestation activities Provinces are responsible for the completion 18
