4 REF NO: KFS-FESD-005 ISSUE NO: 1 PAGE: 4 of 8 This procedure covers from generating tree nurseries, increasing tree cover in medium and high potential areas, sustainable management of tree resources to enterprising on non-timber forests product. 2. PURPOSE This is to ensure adequate control of farm forestry management. 3. RESPONSIBILITY AND AUTHORITY 3.1 Deputy Director 3.2 HOD, Farm Forestry Overseeing implementation strategic plan objectives in the farm forestry Developing and promoting strategies for sustainable management of the farm forestry resources Develop management strategies of farm invasive tree species Promoting tree planting in medium & high potential areas Promote farm forestry related enterprises Production of extension packages for farm forestry Develop guidelines on the implementation on farm forestry activities Provision of Forestry extension services in the medium & high potential areas Promoting participatory forest management and coordinating the development of participatory management plans for managing woodlands, bush lands and grassland resources in the Medium & high potential areas Developing and commercializing wood and Non Wood Forest Products Capacity building for developing, managing and utilizing including marketing of non wood forest products Overseeing compliance with the Forest Act in the farms Acquisition and promotion of technologies for developing, managing and utilization of non wood forest products Promoting inter sectoral collaboration on woodland, bush land and grassland management Causing the rehabilitation and sustainable management of environmentally sensitive sites in the farms Training, awareness creation and curriculum development on farm forestry development and management Acquisition and promotion of efficient charcoal production and utilization technologies Establish and maintain a database on farm forestry resources Revenue generation and resources mobilization for farm forestry.

DETAILS OF PROCEDURE 6.1 Promotion of Tree growing (farms) Identify the community to work with Create an awareness to the community as necessary, through:- Sensitization, Trainings, Demonstrations, Possible support especially on seed nurseries Assess the capacity requirements for the foresters in the field, especially on:- Skills, Knowledge. NOTE 1: Where possible offer in-service training to the foresters through the Kenya Forestry College Forester looks for partners (on farm forestry) within their area of jurisdiction al local level Liaise with schools for partnering. Offer support as necessary Launch tree planting season, coordinated by the forest extension officer At the head quarters, partners are sought at national level Launch the tree planting season at national level through the corporate services division Provide extension material for farm forestry e.g. brochures, posters, etc twice per year, with support of various divisions. 6.2 Increasing Tree Cover (farms) Get conversant with the tree growing policy, acts and plans.

7 REF NO: KFS-FESD-005 ISSUE NO: 1 PAGE: 7 of Draw annual work plan capturing every zone and apportion resources equitably to have the national outlook Draw monthly work plan Trickle the monthly work plan to the zones Communicate the activities that ought to be done Zonal Manager entrench the activities in to their monthly work plans Involve farmers on tree planting on decision making to identify where tree planting can entrenched in their work plans on their land or land owners e.g. councils Conduct training where necessary Forester generates the necessary reports and forwards accordingly. 6.3 Commercial procedures NOTE 2: All commercial procedures are implemented to the farmers free of charge except the movement permit Link farmers to the market Offer market information to the farmers Support farmers with valuation of their products Provide movement permits to the farmers. Assess the material Encourage farmers to value add to their products i.e. sensitize the farmers on efficient methods Advice farmers on non timber products. 6.4 Registration of Private Forester Private farmers are free to register with KFS Registered private farmers access personalized registration service Local authorities wave the land rates. 6.5 Foresters availability KFS offices are clearly branded in the field Foresters in the field wear uniform while on duty.
