14 Relax drying technique Relax drying technique is based on the use of large quantities of steam in the drying process, which gives a considerably better drying result compared to conventional kilning In the Relax drying technique steam is initially used to heat up the timber, which minimizes the shake formation Steam is also used at the end of the drying process to level out the moisture content, and thus giving a tension free timber Relax drying technique can be used on all products with a target moisture content of 14 percent or lower Less problems with shakes, twist and cupping Completely stable timber which will not move when processed, eg deep cutting Minimal variation in moisture content within each piece, but also between different pieces from the same batch Tension free. The wood fibre from dry-split and fine-textured northern Swedish spruce gives the boarding naturally high durability. 23 News! Time saving and quality improvement! Surface-treated exterior cladding As a building s outer shell, exterior cladding is vulnerable, being exposed to weather and to the changing seasons, with their varying temperatures and humidity. UV radiation, pollutants and micro-organisms, including mould and algae, are examples of external factors that reduce the durability of the wood. To efficiently protect the timber and prolong durability, it is important to surfacetreat the wood while it is fresh. SCA Timber s surface-treated exterior cladding I ndustrially painted at our own painting facility. Alternative surface treatments. SCA Timber s exterior cladding, made of slow-grown Norrland pine, is planed directly before basic surface treatment to guarantee that the surface is completely free from pollutants. Apart from priming, there is the option of treating the cladding with further intermediate coats of alkyd- or acrylate-based top coat. When the industrially surfacetreated cladding is then mounted on the building, one or two final coats are recommended. 21

25 Finished products Living-with-wood Pressure-treated wood The NTR/A protected wood class is intended for wood in permanent contact with soil or fresh water or in constructions above ground in which personal safety demands that it does not weaken or in situations where it is difficult to inspect or replace. Applications of class NTR/A treated wood include posts, balconies, garden wood and freshwater constructions (docks, etc.). The NTR/AB protected wood class is intended for wood that is exposed to weather and wind or condensation but is not in contact with soil or water and where replacement of damaged portions and personal safety are not the foremost concerns. Applications of class NTR/AB treated wood include fences, planking, trellises, pergolas, deck/patio flooring and play ground equipment. The treated wood complies with SS-EN and NTR (Nordic Wood Protection Council) document 1:1998.
