3 FORESTRY INDUSTRY AND FORESTRY TECHNOLOGY A natural growth market As the first link in the value-adding chain, the forestry sector forms one of the most important parts of LIGNA HANNOVER. The leading trade fair for the forestry and timber industries gives industry professionals a concentrated insight into innovative and sustainable forestry and energy technologies, and creates a display environment that is perfect for international networking. Demand for their products is increasing, driven by the prospect of low investment costs and the prospect of setting up one s own timber business. Potential buyers can choose from a wide range of technical solutions from the most basic mobile systems to stationary saws with a cutting capacity of more than 6,000 solid cubic metres/year. BIOENERGY FROM WOOD A natural source of energy With the expansion of the display category Bioenergy from wood LIGNA HANNOVER is responding to the growing demand for effective, future-proof solutions in the energy market. The aim is to secure supplies of wood and at the same time to conserve natural resources through sustainable forestry management. For manufacturers of woodworking machinery the focus is on reducing the consumption of energy and time. The Bioenergy section of the show in Hall 13, on the open-air site and in the pavilions beneath the Expo Canopy traces the complete value-adding cycle from the processing stage i.e. machines for splitting and cleaving wood, plant for making wood briquettes and pellets to wood-fired furnace systems and boiler plant. The focus is on showcasing new energy-saving initiatives in mechanical and plant engineering, the operation of bioenergy plant, storage and transport, consultancy and planning. Suppliers of readyto-run biomass power plants can also be seen at LIGNA HANNOVER. As well as thermal power plants the exhibits will also include complete wood pellet plants and plant for the production of thermal insulation materials made from wood fibres. The national campaign in Germany is being coordinated by the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, in conjunction with regional government agencies, the business community and industry associations. Initiatives taking place during LIGNA HANNOVER 2011: the Convention Center is hosting a conference exploring strategies for a sustainable future for the forestry and timber industries in Germany and Europe. And Lower Saxony s Ministry of Agriculture will boast a presentation in Pavilion 32 entitled: Forests for Lower Saxony naturally sustainable. IN2WOOD The EU research and innovation project IN2WOOD, with 13 project partners from six European forest regions, is currently working to develop new methods for sustainable forestry, timber construction in the urban environment, the efficient extraction of energy from wood, logistical systems, regional innovation systems and a transregional information system. A further aim of the IN2WOOD project is to promote knowledge-sharing and cluster formation both within the individual regions and interregionally, to bring important forest regions in south-east Europe within the scope of the project and to develop new partnerships. Here athletes will be demonstrating their prowess with the axe and saw. 9 th Crane Driving Championship On the open-air site the best crane drivers from Lower Saxony will be competing against each other in various disciplines.

5 SAWMILL TECHNOLOGY SOLID WOOD WORKING Naturally a cut above the rest In Hall 27 you ll find an array of international companies boasting their technological innovations and new concepts in the field of sawmill technology. As well as newly developed machinery and plant, the show features innovations and opportunities for resource-efficient production. 8 HANDWERK, HOLZ & MEHR HANDWERK, HOLZ & MEHR The only show of its kind for tradesmen in North Germany Under the aegis of LIGNA HANNOVER Handwerk, Holz & mehr has successfully established itself as the leading trade show for joiners, cabinet-makers and carpenters. In 2011 this show-within-a-show in Halls 11 and once again presents the complete spectrum of products and services for the skilled woodworking trades and timber construction to an international trade public under the motto innovative, efficient, trendsetting. In 2009 a total of 460 exhibitors showcased their products, innovations, solutions and services for the skilled woodworking trades on more than 23,000 square metres of display area. An audience of 35,000 out of a LIGNA visitor total of 80,000 attended Handwerk, Holz & mehr. This regionally based trade show is more than just a gettogether of joiners, cabinet-makers and carpenters in North Germany. 9 SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS AND PRIZE AWARDS SERVICES FOR VISITORS Building with Wood The Lower Saxony Association of Master Carpenters is organizing the presentation Building with Wood, which brings visiting professionals up to date with the latest advances in this field. (Hall 17) The German Timber Construction Prize The official presentation of the 2011 German Timber Construction Prize takes place once again at Handwerk, Holz & mehr on 31 May Competition entries will be displayed at the exhibition stand of the Lower Saxony Association of Master Carpenters (VNZ) in Hall 17. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS VDMA vector Forum The Action Forum vector will be showing highlights from LIGNA HANNOVER on the Internet! A full-day program of live presentations at the Forum and video reports on selected exhibitors and products from all sections of the show will be available as a live video stream. LIGNA Talents encouraging young talent to enter the woodworking trades The new competition for schoolchildren at LIGNA HANNOVER 2011 pits teams of pupils against each other in a number of disciplines. This marks a change of direction and format for Careers in Wood, the long-running VDMA-sponsored platform for young people. Under the direction of professionals the competing teams of pupils will produce short film reports and write an online show newspaper, design CNC programs and test them out on machines at the show.
