5 City of Suceava General description Suceava city is located in the North East of Romania at 450 km from the capital Bucharest at 60 km from border with Ukraine Population: inhabitants; Density: 2245 inhabitants/s m; Surface: 52.1 km2 ; 5

6 City of Suceava History The first documentary confirmation of Suceava city is from 1388, during Petru I s reign In the XV century Suceava becomes capital of Moldavia In 1786 Suceava city gets the statute of commercial free town In 1868 Suceava becomes the residence for Suceava County that is the 14th largest county in Romania (42 counties) 6

10 City of Suceava Transport and Traffic Road Transport System total length of the street network is 120 km motorization degree is 143/1000 inhabitants (national level 250/1000) typical for the street network : the deficient structure as opposed to traffic importance and to the total lack of the release roads; the insufficient width of roads and the placement of the blocks of flats to their nearest side; the high degree of road systems, the most of the covering being of asphalt or cement concrete; characteristics for the street network : insufficient road width compared to the traffic intensity, sinuous streets and high declivity roads (over 4%), difficult traffic in the central area and in the residential areas, insufficient equipping for traffic road guiding for roads and crossings, insufficient parking places; the traffic intensity exceeds vehicles/hour on the main axes 10

18 City of Suceava SMILE - towards Sustainable MobIlity for people in urban areas Partners : Malmo, Norwich, Tallinn, Potenza, Suceava Objectives : -- To create a safer, cleaner and more attractive public transport system - To make public transport more attractive and to increase the number of passengers by providing better public transport information - To increase citizen s support for alternative fuel vehicles and environmentally friendly ways of traveling LEZ - achievements - 24 % of the street became pedestrian area -adjacent road was open in the city centre in order to divert traffic from the LEZ - 4 Eco Routes PT performed by Euro 3 buses with LPG facilities - extend the concept in other residential areas 18

28 MIDAS Project -Measures to Influence transport Demand to Achieve Sustainability - Local workshops in high schools and schools in order to prepare the consultation process,design and implementation of the travel plans - Mobility Centre real time information regarding traffic, PT and alternative ways of travelling - Several on street events and other promotion activities were used for promote MIDAS project s objectives (A day without a car in Suceava city, Europe Day, City Days, Auto Show Room in the LEZ, Christmas Day ) - Travel plans for schools(3), high schools(4) and public institution(2) - Information regarding traffic and travel alternatives available on local VMS 28
