Best Practice Guidelines for Ecological Restoration Karen Keenleyside Parks Canada

Protected Area Restoration and the IUCN 2008 resolution requesting the IUCN Director General to work with all parties involved in restoring the world s ecosystems to: 1. Produce, prior to 2012, a Best Practice Protected Area Guideline for Ecological Restoration 2. Work with governments on the dissemination, application and use of the Guideline; and 3. Develop and implement programmes for further guidance, awareness raising, capacity building, monitoring, and research in regards to ecological restoration in protected areas.

IUCN members agreed......ecological restoration should be effective, practical and affordable, enable full and effective participation of indigenous and local communities, and contribute to long-lasting outcomes of enhanced biodiversity, enhanced ecosystem resilience to climate change and other global changes, improved protected area management and improved human well-being

CBD SBSTTA 14 Recommendation The Conference of the Parties Invites the IUCN World Commission i on Protected t Areas and other relevant organizations to develop technical guidance on ecological l restoration, conservation connectivity and corridors, and adaptation ti to and mitigation of climate change

Activities to date: Workshops held in 2008 and 2009 to share ideas and experiences 2009 Task force initiated Agreement on key elements of guidelines Indigenous Peoples Restoration Network Working Group

What is Ecological Restoration? The process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed

Why restore protected areas?...to re-establish establish healthy natural ecosystems and provide opportunities for people to develop a positive and long-lasting sense of personal connection with nature, while respecting our cultural values and practices Protected areas that are resilient and relevant in a changing world
