Actions in the field of biodiversity management (Conservation, use ) State the type of actions and the main characteristics as well as the results of your project that will be of direct use for biodiversity managers for conservation and sustainable use. 353 Rapport d activité final Page 5

6 CDroms and field guide, the main results of the project, can be used as a tool to manage biodiversity of forest trees in the 3 involved national parks. The manager and technical staffs can use the information (botany, phenology, usage) for local biodiversity monitoring and in-situ conservation. For example, with the fruiting period, the user can choose the parent trees to gather seed of the interested species for a reforestation program. 9. Results in favor of the management Organisational results : In your view, what benefits have you drawn from SEP support in terms of organisation?: The SEP353 project supported us in a part of fund to reorganize our laboratory by the botanical disciplines, specially for group of palynology and group vascular plant taxonomy. Scientific results : The identification software and field guide on some precious forest trees in the southeast region of Vietnam are the main results of the project. They can be used not only as an identification software for studying and teaching plant taxonomy and palynology but also as an management tool for tropical forest trees diversity. The software even can be used by the customers in boundary to determine if the specimens are in the forbidden list to export or not. Products : - A field guide for some representative forest trees in the southeast region of Vietnam with the detail botanical description, specially for leaf and their pollen. It is the first time the pollen morphology is combined in a field guide. - 2 CDroms, 1 for identification for forest trees in the southeast of Vietnam and 1 for their pollen. Improved capacities in researchers, teachers and young students able to take over in the future: The project SEP353 gives us, who are working on disciplines of botany, the opportunity to study more intensively the palynology, plant morphology, plant taxonomy and tropical plant diversity. Within the project, there are 1 master thesis (Nguyen Tran Quoc Trung) and 1 underway PhD student (Dang Le Anh Tuan), who are both working in department of Ecology and Evolutionary biology. With the knowledge and experience they achieved during this project, they can develop their research skills and use them for their lectures in the university. The project is also gives us a chance to combine the traditional botanical knowledge on papers with information technology. The 3 main products of this project (the field guide and 2 cdroms) not only will be used as teaching toolkit for botany in our faculty but also will give our students an approach to study botanical disciplines. During the project, there are 3 students graduated (Nguyen Le Xuan Bach and Nguyen Manh Hoang in 2009 and Le Hoang Tuyet Trinh in 2010). Among them, Nguyen Le Xuan Bach chose the job in research field in the institution of tropical biology and he is now at the first year of the program Master BVT in Montpellier with the financial support from SEP. Within the project, we also worked with 4 groups of students (1 on palynology, 1 on anatomy, 1 on plant morphology and herbarium and the last one on leaf hydraulic). The work gave the students a chance to work as the researchers both in field and in laboratory in the disciplines of botany and the teachers the opportunity to develop their teaching skills. 353 Rapport d activité final Page 6

7 10. Other results Mention here any other result of your project which does not fit in the preceding categories. 11. Propositions for SEP next phase Research themes, or domains of priority in herbaria and botanic gardens support, wishes for the financial management, other aspects: In case of there is the next phase of SEP: - Continue to support to develop software for forest Tree of Vietnam and Pollens in South of Vietnam with more sufficient budget. - Develop the identification program for medicinal plants - More opened for the revision on Flora of Cambodia, Lao and Vietnam: accept the support from botanist community, not just in France, welcome the manuscripts and publish in English. - Support for research projects on non vascular plants such as Algae and Bryophyte - Concentrate more finance in research and develop human resource for developing countries, special in biodiversity hot spots. - Divide the budget more equivalent among the regions, not just focus into one or another. 12. General comments and conclusions During the 3 year of project SEP 353, we collected in total 386 forest trees, identified 297 taxa with 265 at species level, introduced the application of IDAO for Tan Phu forest trees to the staffs of 3 national parks involed to the project, Faculty of Foresty, University of Agriculture and Forestry, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Science. The 2 IDAO applications were developed for the pollens of 80 tree species in Tan Phu forest and for 20 in Cat Tien national park will be a good foundation to enrich the identifcation toolkit for the pollens of forest trees in the southeastern region of Vietnam. The 3 main products of the project (the field guide and 2 cdroms) not only will be used as teaching toolkit for botany in our faculty but also will give our students an approach to study botanical disciplines. The results can be also used as an management tool for tropical forest trees diversity and for local biodiversity monitoring and in-situ conservation.. To complete the project : - Complete the database and image toolkits to develop the software for the identified species of trees and their pollens. - Continue to support the cotutelle thesis - Prepare for the publication of Cdroms, and field guide. This final report is filled out by DANG LE Anh Tuan Date: 09/02/2011 The project being achieved, this report gathers all the results obtained. 353 Rapport d activité final Page 7
