6 Background Forests from the Mediterranean is currently handicapped by fragmenta:on, isola:on and the low benefits they offer. However, these ecosystems provide mul:ple goods and services that are crucial to the socioeconomic development of its rural areas and urban popula:ons. Mediterranean basin countries, and other Mediterranean Climate Areas, face similar challenges regarding the sustainability of forest ecosystems, goods and services. FORESTERRA is a key project in order to reinforce scien:fic coopera:on on Mediterranean forests through a transna:onal Mediterranean ERA NET, which also builds new transcon:nental coopera:on among Mediterranean Climate Areas in order to reduce fragmenta:on and maximise the impact of research ac:vi:es and the exchange of informa:on

7 Work done so far 1) The mapping of exis:ng research capaci:es in the Mediterranean region 2) The defini:on of a clear strategic plan to enhance the coordina:on and integra:on of forest research in the region, involving as well other Mediterranean Climate Areas 3) The establishment of interna:onal coopera:on ac:vi:es and search for common interests with other Mediterranean climate areas: Australia 4) Launch of the Foresterra Joint Call
