2 Forests in the EU» EU currently consists of 159 mill. of forests/ 180 mill with OWL» 40,3% of EU forests is publicly owned (mainly state and communal)» Public ownership dominates in most of the Eastern and South-Eastern Member States» Average size of public forest holding - more than 1000 ha (considerable differences among MS) based on data for 24 EU Member States» Round wood production in EU forests 435 mill. m3 (2013)» 20% of round wood produced was fuel wood

12 EU context Ecolabels The EU Ecolabel was launched in 1992 by the European Commission in light of developing a Europe-wide voluntary environmental labelling scheme that consumers could trust ( products and services comprised by licenses): wooden floor coverings wooden furniture converted paper products copying and graphic paper Newsprint, printed & tissue paper EU Timber Regulation Certification is one of several means of proof of the legality of timber introduced by the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) RED recast (80) it is appropriate to strengthen the role of voluntary international and national certification schemes for verification of compliance with the sustainability criteria in a harmonised manner (82) Voluntary schemes play an increasingly important role in providing evidence of compliance with the sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions saving criteria

13 So far actions 1 st Experience sharing workshop (23/9/2014, Brussels) EUSTAFOR should form a group of people to monitor the changes in forest certification standards and to facilitate the elaboration of consolidated views and opinions to further use them in any public consultations or bilateral contacts with representatives of certification bodies 2 nd Workshop: Forest Certification as an optional tool for proving SFM (11/11/2015, Prague) Due to the requests of wood-processing industries, it is recommended for responsible forest owners to consider maintaining the current certification schemes or to implement at least one More info:
