1 FACT SHEET SHELL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GRANTS PROGRAMME Introduced in 2008, the Shell Sustainable Development Grants Programme acts as a catalyst towards helping the endeavours of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and special interest groups or individuals involved in sustainable development activities. Projects were selected based on practicality, its direct benefits, financial need, sustainability and originality by an independent panel of judges. For 2011 (2012 cycle): Dato Dr Dionysius S.K. Sharma, Executive Director/CEO, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia Dr. Sulochana Nair, Director of Centre for Poverty and Development Studies, University Malaya Grants are awarded to projects in two main focus areas: Environmental conservation: Projects to conserve biodiversity, natural resources and ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, mangroves, coral reefs, peat swamps. These projects may be terrestrial, marine, estuarine, freshwater or aerial in nature. Sustainable livelihood: Projects to develop the poor and/or community livelihood especially capacity building. 1

2 2011 RECIPIENTS Environmental Conservation Projects to conserve biodiversity, natural resources and ecosystems; including forests, wetlands, mangroves, coral reefs, peat swamps. These projects may be terrestrial, marine, estuarine, freshwater or aerial in nature. : Wetlands International - Malaysia : Study on fish diversity in Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve the largest and last remaining peat swamp forest in Johor : The project aims to conduct a baseline survey on the diversity of fishes and to highlight the importance and significance of these species to relevant stakeholders and decision makers, and to provide recommendations for fish conservation in Air Hitam Forest Reserves. : Global Environment Centre (GEC) : Local community participation in mangrove rehabilitation and public education (Kuala Gula, Perak) : The project aims to build awareness, educate the key stakeholders and the public on the functions and values of the mangrove ecosystems in order to protect the remaining mangroves and rehabilitate the degraded ones. : Centre for Policy Research and International Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) : RM15,000 : Creating awareness amongst youth on the importance of mangrove ecosystem in Penang : The aim of this project is to monitor the primary productivity health of the ecosystem and create awareness on the importance of the ecosystem in our daily lives amongst the youth. The project will involve 20 students from 4 schools that 2

3 are located near the mangrove area. The students will conduct the research together with the researchers from USM. : Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society : Detectives Needed! Look out for water pollution : The project aims to collect further data to determine the water quality at KK Wetlands and run a programme to enlist the help from the community for monitoring. The rapid assessment will map the waterways in KK wetlands, map the communities and the stakeholders to identify the pollution source; recruiting volunteers as Wetland Rangers. : Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (REACH) : Cloud Forest Conservation Project in Gunung Binchang (Malaysia) : The project's ultimate aim is to convert Gunung Brinchang area into a state park. The project objectives include raising public awareness on the need to conserve cloud forests, reforestation work; and to set up a research centre for mossy forest. : Ecoknights : RM50,000 : Anugerah Hijau 2012 : Anugerah Hijau is about getting the youths of today to explore their creativity on environmental understanding and appreciation through films and fashion. 3

4 : Kelab Alami : RM25,000 : Kelab Alami in Mukim Tg Kupang, Johor : The project is about environmental protection via youth empowerment. The youth are enrolled via a club membership where they learn about the sensitive environment surrounding their "kampung". Their learnings are then translated to them becoming youth rangers and ambassadors of their area. : Penang Inshore Fishermen Welfare Association (PIFWA) : RM35,000 : Creating awareness on the importance of salt water mangrove biodiversity in Penang through education and conservation : PIFWA aims to build a life lab or an educational centre where educational activities relating to salt water mangrove will take place; also a continuation of replanting activities. Project : Persatuan Warisan Bung Bratak (PERWARIBB) : RM50,000 : Conservation of Bung Bratak Cultural and Biodiversity Heritage : The project aims to conserve the only remaining virgin tropical forest within the Bratak region by having a perimeter survey and mapping of the boundary of the Community Forest Reserve; to collect baseline data on the biodiversity and physical features of tourism attraction; tagging existing trees and plants; repair and upgrade existing infrastructure i.e. footpath, jungle trails; train the locals on homestay, handicraft and basic tourist guiding. 4

5 Sustainable Livelihood Projects to develop the poor / community livelihood through capacity building. Project Title : Komuniti Pengurusan Sumber Perikanan (KPSP) Tanjung Berembang : RM20,000 : Increase fishermen livelihood and imparting awareness on river care : To increase the livelihood of the fishermen community, and at the same time to impart knowledge and awareness on river pollution, and steps to mitigate it. : Centre for Marine & Coastal Studies (CEMACS) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) : RM20,000 : Community-based Seagrass Meadows Conservation in Penang South Channel : The project aims to empower and educate the local community and surrounding school children on the importance of seagrass meadows. Secondary aim is to produce a marine flora and fauna handbook of Penang South Channel. : Centre for Marine & Coastal Studies (CEMACS) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) : RM20,000 : Learning through nature exploration and products from waste materials towards public awareness and sustainability : The project aims to educate secondary school children, the surrounding community and other CBOs on the importance of the flora and fauna at the Penang National Park through fun activities. 5

6 : Triaxiss (Student of MBA in SD) Graduate School of Business, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) : RM25,000 : Jasmine the Human Touch : The project strives to provide an approach to poverty alleviation by capacity building through skills development; the planting of jasmine flower trees. The project draws up a full solution from sourcing to planting to marketing and supply, and distribution channel. : Partner of Community s (PACOS) Trust : RM50,000 : Building capacity of rural indigenous women in Kpg. Kopuron, Telupid Beluran, Kpg. Tiong, Tamparuli Tuaran and continuing capacity building activities in Kpg. Komburonggo, Matunggong Kudat. : The project aims to build capacity of indigenous women in food processing, organic agriculture and handicraft making, in order to create alternative income generation and reduce poverty. Indirectly the programme aims to also build their skills in the areas of programme planning, community participation, monitoring and evaluation. : Tatana Roots Community (The Preserver of Dusun Tatana s Cultural & Natural Heritage) : RM50,000 : Dusun Tatana: Documentation and preservation of the cultural and natural heritage of this indigenous group in Sabah (Kuala Penyu) : The project aims to document the cultural and natural heritage of the Dusun Tatana community; to educate the community with the right skills, knowledge and tools for them to continue to be caretakers of their traits. A longer-term aim is to build a homestay programme for the community to gain economically. 6

7 : Land Empowerment Animals People (LEAP) : Community Abai Project (CAP) : This community is a traditional fishing based community located in the estuary of the Kinabatangan River in Eastern Sabah. The small scale fishing and logging were the primary sources of employment which has since declined due to overfishing by the large-scale fishermen. The project aims to harness and build capacity among the villagers, generating alternative and sustainable sources of employment and income, through eco-tourism and habitat restoration activities and protecting the diverse forest habitats and wildlife of the Lower Kinabatangan River. 7
