3 Proceedings / Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences 49 ( 2012 ) Foreword by 1nCEBS Conference Advisor Assalamualikum wbt and Greetings It is with warmness that we welcome our respected speakers, distinguished guests and participants to this faculty for yet another conference. I must congratulate the Centre for Environment-Behaviour Studies (ce-bs), organizers of this 1st National Conference on Environment Behaviour Studies (1nCEBS) for organizing this historic event. Indeed it is truly historic, because of the Triple First occasion if we were to include the two sidelines of the conference as well formalization of AMER (Association of Malaysian Environment-Behaviour Researchers) and AJEBS (Asian Journal of Environment Behaviour Studies). While AMER would be the platform to booster closer cooperation and networking amongst the EB studies researchers nationally, AJEBS an international double-blind refereed journal with focus on researches conducted within the Asian / Pacific region.- would be the international platform outreach especially for those local researchers. Recognition and support from distinguished academicians and personalities in the publication of AJEBS had been overwhelmed, judging from the growing numbers of those who wish to sit on the editorial board. Thus far, more than 25 of those academicians from more than 15 countries worldwide had confirmed to contribute. Our faculty has always and would continuously and strongly support any academic activities such as this conference that would inculcate and nurture the research and writing culture especially amongst the staff members of this faculty. For example, very recently two of our other Centre of Excellence (CoE) the Centre of Applied Biodiversity Conservation & Sustainable Development (CABCSD) and the Centre of Environmental Design and Management (CEDM), successfully joint-organized the International Geographical Union (IGU) Conference held here in July this year. Similar efforts were also accomplished by the other CoEs of the faculty, namely the Centre of Heritage and Malay Arts (Warisan), Centre of Construction Project and Infrastructure Management (CPIM), Centre of Real Estate Research (CORE) and Centre of Geospatial Technology (CGT). All those initiatives and efforts are some of the examples of the faculty s continuous contribution to UiTM, in particular to expedite her aspiration in attaining the Research University status. The ce-bs is the youngest amongst the seven CoEs within the faculty. All those centres had been entrusted by the faculty to create and propagate opportunities for faculty members to actively participate in research and consultancy activities within the focus area of each centre. Those centres have and continuously are engaging actively in various initiatives of linkages and networking with other related establishments and organizations both nationally and internationally. This faculty strongly supports further initiatives and far sightedness of ce-bs which include the organising of the forthcoming Second National Conference (2nCEBS) to be held in 7-8th July 2010, prior to organising Malaysia s 1st International Conference on Environment Behaviour Studies (M1iCEBS) in November Special assistance would be given to the centre s bid to host the International Associaiton of People-Environment Studies (IAPS) Congress 2012, succeeding the IAPS Congress 2010 to be held in Leipzig, Germany. We sincerely do hope that those initiatives by ce-bs would continuously strengthen further our cooperation and collaboration amongst researchers and practitioners in the EB studies field, both nationally and internationally. Till we meet again in 2010, we wish you all an enlightening conference. ASSOC. PROF. DR. WAN MOHD NAIM WAN MOHD Advisor, 1st National Conference on Environment-Behaviour Studies (1nCEBS) Dean, Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA

4 4 Proceedings / Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences 49 ( 2012 ) 1 7 Foreword by 1nCEBS Conference Chair Assalamualikum wbt and Greetings On behalf of the Organising Committee, let me welcome our respected speakers, distinguished guests and participants to this nation s historic occasion - the 1st National Conference on Environment Behaviour Studies (1nCEBS), organised by our Centre for Environment-Behaviour Studies (ce-bs), Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying (FSPU), UiTM. Historic because this conference is not only the first major event to be organized by ce-bs, FSPU, UiTM since its formal establishment by UiTM in 2008, but more significantly it s the first nationallevel event ever to be organised that concerns the environment-behaviour (EB) studies field. Today marked the end of a very long dream which finally came true a dream that backdated almost 9 years ago when ce-bs was just HSBU (Human Spatial Behaviour Unit) the SIG (Special Interest Group) in the Department of Architecture, FSPU, UiTM. Lack of local literatures on EB studies then indicated the lack of the nation s interest in that field. HSBU s initial research works were on crime prevention environment which mainly involved the university s campus in Shah Alam as the setting, funded by the then UiTM s BRC (now, RMI). The major break came in 2002 when HSBU secured MOSTI s IRPA research grant on the study of crime prevention for Malaysia s nationwide residential areas, which was successfully completed in That research project was also the starting point for the involvement of lecturers from other departments within the faculty to collaborate with HSBU. As interest on EB studies from the faculty s various departments increased, HSBU was elevated and became the faculty s SIG and renamed CEPS (Centre for Environmental Psychology Studies) in That became the basis in the establishment of ce-bs when UiTM recognized it as one of the faculty s Centres of Excellence. The ce-bs is linked with the International Associaiton of People-Environment Studies (IAPS) currently based in Dijon, France. Being the nation s 1st conference on EB studies, the main objective of 1nCEBS was to gauge the nation s interest on that field of study. Due to the nature of EB studies being multi-disciplinary, and the intention to congregate maximum local researchers in that field, the 1nCEBS is without a specific conference theme. Conference papers address various issues pertaining to the EB studies field. For the break-out presentations, the papers were categorized within the most appropriate environment grouping. Overall 1nCEBS attracted 58 numbers of abstracts, which finally transformed into 45 numbers of full papers for oral presentations and for publications in the Conference Proceedings. Majority of the topics for the proceedings involved the Residential & Community Environment (33%), followed by Outdoor Environment,(27%), Learning Environment (11%), Children s Environment and Retail & Services Environment (both 9%) Older People Environment (7%) and Work Environment (4%)..Majority (57%) of contributors were from UiTM and the rest from 10 other establishments, which included a couple from Indonesia and Malaysians currently studying in the UK. Coupled with 1nCEB s main objective was to inculcate and nurture the research and writing culture specifically amongst EB researchers nationwide. As it was pertinent to continuously develop that culture further after 1nCEBS, two other activities- as 1nCEBS s sidelines - involved the establishment of AMER (Association of Malaysian Environment-Behaviour Researchers) and AJEBS (Asian Journal of Environment Behaviour Studies). The main objective of AMER being to increase closer cooperation amongst Malaysian EB researchers which transcends across individual establishments. AJEBS, an international double-blind refereed journal focus on researches conducted within the Asian / Pacific region. Thus far it has attracted 33 distinguished academicians from 14 countries worldwide on its editorial board. Selected 1nCEBS papers shall spearhead the publication of AJEB s maiden issue in January Further initiatives of ce-bs include the organising of the forthcoming Second National Conference (2nCEBS) to be held in 7-8th July 2010, prior to organising Malaysia s 1st International Conference on Environment Behaviour Studies (M1iCEBS) in November The ce-bs had also bid to host the IAPS Congress 2012 in Shah Alam, succeeding the Congress 2010 to be held in Leipzig, Germany. We sincerely do hope that those initiatives by ce-bs would continuously strengthen further our cooperation and collaboration amongst researchers and practitioners in the EB studies field. Till we meet again in 2010, we wish you all an enlightening conference. ASSOC. PROF. DR. MOHAMED YUSOFF ABBAS Chair, 1st National Conference on Environment-Behaviour Studies (1nCEBS) Editor-in-Chief, Asian Journal of Environment-Behaviour Studies (AJEBS) ISSN: Head, Centre for Environment-Behaviour Studies (ce-bs), FSPU, UiTM
