NordGen is a Nordic institute for the conservation and sustainable use of plants, farm animals and forest trees NordGen s basic goal is to secure genetic diversity for agriculture, horticulture and forestry in the Nordic countries

NordGen Builds on: More than 40 years of cooperation within genetic resources within the Nordic region A merge of : The Nordic Gene Bank (NGB) The Nordic Gene Bank Farm Animals (NGH) The Nordic Council for Forest Reproductive Material (NSFP) With offices in Alnarp, Sweden and in Ås, Norway

NordGen Farm Animals A knowledge center for research and information on sustainable conservation and utilization of farm animal genetic resources in old and modern breeds. Projects ex: NordMilk, NordMeat Faroes island horse, Swedish fjellcow Poultry genebank at Hvam, Norway Finnsheep Nordic brown bee Norwegian Lundedog breed Horizon 2020 IMAGE OCS Kystgeit - goats Work via network and projects with national coordinators and international partners from Universitites, private companies, research intstitutes etc 7

NordGen Plants The Nordic Gene Bank Conserve and document genetic variation in Nordic agricultural and horticultural plant material Make genetic resources and related information accessible for breeders, scientists and other users Advice National authorities on matters concerning plant genetic resources

NordGen Plants Networks Working groups Cereals Forages Industrial crops Vegetables, potatoes, herbs, medicinal plants Fruits, berries & ornamentals - Access to crop specific expertise - Increases relevance - User focus - Link to National Programs

Nordic Seed Collections The collection includes 530 species and varieties of cultivated crops and their wild relatives, with 33,500 registered accessions and 22,000 pending. The Gene Bank is working with material of Nordic origin or relevance

in situ field gene banks Each country is responsible for the conservation of vegetatively propagated plant material. NordGen is responsible for storing and distributing documentation about the material in the national collections. Norway: 21 Sweden: 14 Finland: 4 Denmark: 2 Iceland: 2 Locations of clonal archives (including Baltic clonal archives)

Documentation system SESTO Seed Store Open source freely accessible Central on-line data portal Gives public access to Nordic plant genetic resources and information Tool for NordGen staff and partners New Data Management System will be implemented within the next years

Ex-situ - Long term seed conservation Active collection - Alnarp, Sweden Distribution, characterisation, regeneration, analyses of material and development tests Base collection - Årslev, Denmark Base storage, rejuvenation Safety deposit Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV), Norway Duplication of Base collection

Who is using the collections, and what are they used for? 75 % used for research, breeding, training/education, for development of food and agricultural products Private accounts for 25% of the use hobby (directly or through NGO s) Users in the Nordic countries account for 70% of the orders

Public, privat partnership for pre-breeding - (PPP) Support development of Nordic plant breeding for longterm needs in agriculture & horticulture Adaptation to climate change Meeting environment goals Consumer & market demand Pre-competitive, strategic 18

Public, privat partnership for pre-breeding - (PPP) PPP-project - 50% public and 50% private Projects in barley-, raygrass- and appleprebreeding and technical development Members in PPP are 12 out of 13 breeding entities: Denmark: Sejet Plantbreeding, Nordic Seed, DLF-Trifolium, KU- Science, LKF Vandel. Finland: Boral Plant Breeding and Natural Resources Institute (LUKE) Iceland: Agricultural University (LBHI). Norway: Graminor, The Norwegian University of Life Sciences Sweden: Lantmännen, Syngenta, Findus and Swedish Agricultural University (SLU) Associated is Jõgeva Plant breeding Institut in Estonia

Objective of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault Provide a safety net for the international conservation system of plant genetic resources, and to contribute to the securing of the maximum amount of plant genetic diversity of importance to humanity for the long term

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault NordGen operate and manage the Svalbard Global Seed Vault Agreement between the Norwegian Government, Global Crop Diversity Trust (FAO) and NordGen Black box arrangement. Today seed samples have been deposited with today in the storage from 76 depositors
