MAES FOREST Workshop Brussels, 02/12/14 Introduction to MAES, analytical framework and pilot on forest ecosystems and their services Anne Teller European Commission DG Environment, Unit B.2 José I. Barredo European Commission Joint Research Centre, Forest Resources and Climate Unit

EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy (2011) addressing main drivers of biodiversity loss and aiming to reduce key pressures specific, partly time-bound measures

Are Europe s ecosystems in good shape to continue delivering essential ecosystem services? Can we value the flow of ecosystem services from ecosystems to society? Which drivers of change increase or decrease the delivery of ecosystem services? We need to Map and Assess Ecosystems and their Services

Working group MAES on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services Oversees implementation of Overall guidance by Nature Directors Operational steering by the Coordination Group for Biodiversity and Nature MAES working group European Environment Agency (data) European COM (policy) MAES Member States (policy and implementation) Action 5 Provides practical guidance on technical issues (mapping) but also on mainstreaming ecosystem services into sectoral policies (indicators) EU input to Natural Capital Accounting Framework Scientists and experts (advice)

Working group MAES on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services Conceptual framework for mapping and assessment linking human well-being to biodiversity Typologies for ecosystems (EUNIS-CLC) and ecosystem services (CICES) Thematic Pilots (agro-ecosystems, forests, freshwater ecosystems, coastal ecosystems, natural capital accounting)

Working streams Action 5 MAES

Forest Ecosystem and services Forest is the largest terrestrial ecosystem in Europe covering around 40% of the European territory and provides a multitude of benefits (services) to humans Around 23% of EU forest are within Natura 2000 network while 50% of Natura 2000 sites are forest or forest-related Enhancing forest biodiversity is one of the main objectives of the new EU Forest Strategy. Moreover, the EU has set targets to assess and halt biodiversity loss in its Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 At EU level a specific action setting-up the analytical framework for Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem and their Services (MAES) has been developed with the aim of providing a more harmonised approach Wide-process involving different Commission services, MS and stakeholders

MAES Pilots: participants and stakeholders

MAES Pilot on Forest Ecosystems and their services To identify available knowledge that can be used to map forest ecosystems and assess their condition and the services they provide (including forest biodiversity) An analytical framework for ecosystem assessment (1 st MAES report, 2013) in order to ensure consistent approaches are used Indicators for ecosystem mapping and assessments (2 nd MAES Report, 2014) List and assessment of available forest ecosystem services indicators and datasets (mapping and assessment)
