1 Revision Date: --9 Stand Examiner: Rick Hill Legal Description: TN-RW, sections and Compartment Review Presentation Gwinn Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County Marquette Management Area: Voelker Plains Identified Planning Goals: Vegetative management in the Voelker Plains management area will provide a variety of forest products; maintain or enhance wildlife habitat; protect areas with unique characteristics; and provide for forest based recreational uses. Soil and topography: Glacial and outwash plains form topography that is nearly level to gently rolling. Soils are course sands or organics in drainage way bottomlands. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: This compartment is bordered by small non-industrial private ownerships. Land use is primarily for forest production, passive recreation, and residential. Unique Natural Features: The Escanaba River flows through section. Several other small streams also occur over this land. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: There are no known sites in this compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None known at this time. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: This compartment contains the West Branch of the Escanaba River which is a Type trout stream greater than width. In addition, this compartment contains Rocky Creek and several unnamed tributaries which are all designated Type trout streams less than width which serve as tributaries to the West Branch of the Escanaba River. A buffer is recommended for Rocky Creek and unnamed tributaries in riparian areas adjacent to stands which include Aspen. For all other riparian areas, Best Management Practices should be followed to reduce erosion into waterbodies. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Compartment is found within the Voelker Plains Management Area; on an Outwash Plain in central Marquette County. The dominant Natural Communities are dry northern forests and dry mesic northern forests. Wildlife considerations in the Voelker Plains management area consist of: managing jack pine habitat with strategies that more closely mimic natural fire disturbance regimes, and increasing stand size and striving to accommodate many species associated with xeric forest habitat is desirable. Wildlife management issues in the management area are: early successional forest conditions (associated with alder, riparian zones, or forested wetlands), mast (hard and soft); habitat fragmentation, early successional forest; and large open land complexes. The following have been identified as featured species for Voelker Plains Management Area: American woodcock, beaver, black bear, and Kirtland's warbler. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between and feet. The Precambrian Archean Granite/Gneiss subcrops below the glacial drift. This rock could be used as a dimension stone. A gravel pit is located in Section and there should be potential. The abandoned Republic iron mine is located eight miles to the northwest. This area has not been leased previously for metallic exploration, but active leases are located in Section to the west. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: // 9:: AM - Page of DOHMN

2 There is good access to the compartment via Co. Rd and other seasonal and department roads. Survey Needs: There may be some surveys needed for timber sale preparation these will be submitted after preview. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: There is no developed recreation in this compartment. The heaviest public use is for hunting and trapping and other passive recreation. Fire Protection: This compartment is within the Zone dispatch area. Most of the compartment is jack pine with homes and camps on adjacent lands making wild land urban interface a major issue here. This area is relatively close to the Ishpeming office making response times faster. Additional Compartment Information: The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system // 9:: AM - Page of DOHMN

13 Gwinn Mgt. Unit Compartment: Year of Entry Report EXISTING SPECIAL CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS * This is a list of SCA's for this compartment along with a / mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to the Special Conservation Area Map for locations of the below listed Conservation Areas. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA Cold Water Stream Riparian Area A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order. A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. // 9:: AM - Page of
