Facts and Figures Total Budget: EUR 3,2 mio Project Duration: Project Region: Kafa Biosphere Reserve

Project region in the southwest of Ethiopia Protection of Wild Coffee Forests, Ethiopia Kafa Biosphere Reserve, ha

Afromontane Cloud Forests

Biodiversity Hotspot Eastern Afromontane Hotspot (CI)

Biodiversity Hotspot Eastern Afromontane Hotspot (CI)

Origin of Arabica coffee (Coffea Arabica) About 5,000 varieties Invalueable genetic resource

Forested land in Ethiopia decreased in the last centories from 40% to 3% Forests in Kafa are under severe threat: forest loss between 1988 and 2008: ~43% Kafa is one of the last forested areas in Ethiopia and stores about t CO2 p.a. A complete loss of the forests would lead to a release of approx. 25 million tons of CO2 Kafa Biosphere Reserve: hectares (50% covered by natural forests)

Drivers of forest loss in Kafa

Project goals Preserve the remaining Wild Coffee Forests of Kafa Avoid additional greenhouse gas emissions Maintain significant carbon storage capacity Safeguard the provision of ecosystem services Promote regional sustainable development

Project Activities Forest and Community Analysis Participatory Forest Management Rangerteam and Multiplier Program Energy-saving Stoves Reforestation Community Plantations Ecotourism Local Communication Program Forest and Climate Monitoring Fundraising and Marketing Microcredits Project Information Campaign

Project components 1. Reforestation and rehabilitation Forest and community analysis Reforestation and enrichment of 500 ha with native and 200 ha with multipurpose tree species to close gaps and recover the forest where necessary 2. Forest management and household energy Set up ha community forests with fast-growing trees for timber Distribute wood saving stoves Set up Participatory Forest Management (PFM) on ha Set up a forest and climate monitoring system

Project components 3. Sustainable development in Kafa Biosphere Reserve Train and employ a team of 30 Ranger Support ecotourism (wild-coffee experience trails, wild animal and bird observation towers, network of hiking trails, Kafa kingdom open air museum, further-education seminars, a model lodge) Microcredit program Fundraising and marketing concept to secure longterm financing of the Biosphere Reserve 4. Communication and awareness raising Local communication program on climate and forest (Training, workshops, seminars & information events) Information campaign (website, brochures, publications, conferences.)
