COMMERCIALIZATION OF R&D FINDINGS CONTENTS INTRODUCTION FRIM COMMERCIALISATION FOREST PRODUCTS R&D

INTRODUCTION Forest products research started in early 1900 s products In the early time, minor forest produces were important Gutta percha (latex from nyatoh taban merah) Naturally durable timbers for rail sleepes, transmission poles, ship & building constructions Researches were mainly on timber to replace popular species such as chengal & balau The mains areas of research were mechanical properties of timber, processing (sawing & machining), durability and drying

TRL FRI, a research branch/unit under the Forestry Department TRL was moved from Sentul to Kepong in ca Research scope expanded pulp & paper, wood composites, lamination, fire performance, wood finishes, wood energy, etc.

Act s Malaysian Forestry Research and Development Board (MFRDB) ISO 9001 :

FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE MALAYSIA, FRIM Statutory body since 1 Oct 1985 under Act 394 Five research divisions: Forestry, Biodiversity, Biotechnology, Natural Products, and Forest Products 280 researchers

COMMERCIALISATION Researchers are encouraged to file for ID (invention disclosure) Research outputs publications, products, process/protocol Patenting (process, protocol, product) Commercialization Licensing, JV, etc.

COMMERCIALISATION #1 The needs for high quality small volume drying of rubberwood RADIANT MODULAR KILN collaboration between FRIM and KD Technology Sdn. Bhd. MY A: Kiln for drying and conditioning timber or the likes KD Chambers can also be used for other products

COMMERCIALISATION #2 Wood ID services provided by since 1974 Joint research between FRIM and UTAR FRIM ID 13/2017 Mobile wood identification system MyWood-ID GIGO

COMMERCIALISATION #3 Pulp & paper R&D since 1955 Resources: woody biomass and agriculture wastes (EFB, OPT, rice straws, etc.) PI Method of producing pulp from rice straw Taken up by a company in Kedah licensing and royalty fee

FOREST PRODUCTS R&D Basis timber properties and property enhancement studies Wood composite research Nanotechnology Timber in construction Wood energy Wood processing: sawing, machining, peeling, preservation, drying, gluing, finishing

CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER, CLT Background: CLT for building construction material. Applied as load bearing wall panels and slab Applicable as the material for IBS system replacing pre cast concrete Availability of pioneer species and plantation thinnings as material for producing CLT. Several species were short listed such as kelempayan, sesenduk, ludai and balik angin

CLT: PRODUCTION PROCESS Timber processed and sized Lamination process of lamellas 3 perpendicularly oriented layers laminated Final dimension of panel 10ft x 4ft x 3 inches 17

Model structure incorporating CLT panels A CLT structure was built in FRIM. The material is made up of dimensional lumber that has been glued together with structural adhesive and stacked in sheets with perpendicular orientation. Sesenduk was selected based on its density and availability that satisfy the requirements. 18 Acknowledgement into Malaysian Book of Records

Engineered Lumber (3Wood) Using Sustainable Resources Work with an Australian company to evaluate a new technology that can convert lower quality woody materials, such as plantation tree thinnings and oil palm trunk, into high quality timber FRIM collaborated with 3RT Tech Pty Ltd of Australia to develop and promote 3Wood made of selected plantation timber species and OPT.

3Wood Samples tailored as furniture wood with density between 650 kg/m 3 to 850 kg/m 3 Shorea spp. OPT Khaya spp. Jelutong Acacia mangium
