2 OVERVIEW Landscape waste curbside collection programs are available to all properties within the Village limits, as an alternative way to dispose of leaves, brush and tree limbs. The programs are a service to the property owners within the Village limits and only landscape waste generated in the Village will be collected. The Public Works Transportation Department utilizes specialized vacuum equipment attached to Village vehicles to collect leaves from the front yard of each property. The collected leaves will be used to fertilize agricultural fields in the community. Brush and tree limbs placed at the curbside will be chipped by Village personnel using a commercial grade chipper. These materials will be used at Village parks and other facilities. The Village provides bulk curbside leaf collection over a six week period in the Fall and a three week period in the Spring of each year. Brush and tree limb collection is provided the first full week of the month from March through November. 5 ALTERNATIVES Illinois State law prohibits landscape waste from being disposed of in Illinois landfills. Residents are encouraged to recycle landscape waste whenever possible. COMPOSTING/MULCHING Composting is one recycling method that turns organic yard waste into a natural soil additive rich in nutrients. Small, compost piles for residential properties may be easily constructed or premade compost bins can be used to create quality compost for your yard in three to six months. Grass clippings will decompose after mowing in a few days, even without a mulching mower. Clippings return nutrients back to the yard as an added benefit.
