sustainable Five possibilities

your Sustainability advantage

Taking a sustainable and long-term approach is a must in today s market, whatever the industry. This increases the demands being placed on you. Your customers value the feeling that your brand and your products communicate, but they also expect you to apply sustainable thinking down to the smallest detail. Just as you do when choosing your suppliers.

The choice is clear Fresh wood fibre is our hero. Not only because it takes our products beyond the ordinary in terms of their properties. But also because its sustainability enables us, a once quite traditional paper manufacturing company, to push the boundaries further and further. Today, we focus on new and sustainable thinking. Frankly, there is no other choice. Not for us in our business or as part of a world that is only on loan to us temporarily. Holmen Paper has not finished developing, not even close, but we have come a long way. And that creates possibilities for us and for you. How to use the possibilities The possibilities presented here can be used in various ways. As arguments showing that Holmen Paper, which is or perhaps could be your new supplier, thinks sustainably and benefits the environment. Or as a simple way for you to show the world maybe with the help of our crystal clear symbols that you have made a smart and conscious choice. A choice that strengthens your own sustainability work.

1 Traceability

Your first possibility: Traceability When you buy paper from us you know exactly where your paper comes from and you are guaranteed that the fresh fibre is taken from a Swedish forest which is managed in a sustainable, long-term manner. Obvious for us, but surprisingly uncommon in much of the world. All the raw material used to manufacture our paper can be traced back to its origin. This is a castiron guarantee for you and a good foundation for your own sustainability work. We have procedures and certifications that cover the whole chain, from the planting of seedlings all the way to the finished paper. You can always be 100 per cent certain the paper you have chosen comes from responsibly managed forests.

2 Locally grown

Your second possibility: Locally grown You reap what you sow and locally grown has never been a hotter topic. The close proximity between our Swedish forests and the Swedish paper mills is more important than ever, for so many reasons. Among the most obvious are the short transport routes, responsibly managed foresty and less additives. The fact that the raw material is transported over short distances to reach the nearest paper mill is fundamental to our sustainability drive. As is the fact that our raw material which entirely comprises wood from thinning and the parts of the tree that cannot be used for joinery and construction timber is harvested from responsibly managed forests. Forests where, for example, we plant at least two new trees for every one tree that is felled. Pulpwood that has been left lying for a long time requires a whole host of chemical additives to keep the production process up to scratch. We avoid this. The fresher the raw material, the lower the levels of additives required to achieve the right brightness, for example. That is good news for the ecologically minded.

3 Cleaner air

Your third possibility: Cleaner air Thanks to the long-term planning of our well managed forests we can actually claim cleaner air as one of your possibilities. This is a perfectly reasonable claim. Healthy, growing forest captures and stores incredible quantities of carbon dioxide. At the same time, healthy forest produces the oxygen that is so important to humans and animals. In other words we, and our customers, contribute to a cleaner world. The better we manage the forest, the more carbon dioxide it can capture. Old forests, with trees that are more than 90 years old, have less capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, with young and middle-aged forests absorbing the most. This makes our forestry extremely important for everyone. Holmen s forests currently capture well over 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year ( t, 2015), which is much more than all the heavy goods vehicles in Sweden emit over the same period ( t). Our forest stewardship programme gives us more forest each year and thanks to that the amount of carbon dioxide being captured by the forest is growing by approximately tonnes annually. The forest rocks!

4 Reusable

Your fourth possibility: Reusable We like recycling and together with other paper manufacturers we run the recovered paper collection scheme in Sweden. Over 90 per cent of all printing paper is collected and recycled. And recovered paper works well for certain types of products, although by no means all. However, without fresh fibre, there would be no recovered paper not anywhere. Without our paper, based on fresh fibre, the entire European system for recovered paper would break down. This is because wood fibre can only be used between five and seven times, after which the ecocycle has to be topped up with paper made from fresh fibre. The Nordic countries, which manufacture pulp, paper and paperboard from fresch fibre have plenty of forest and therefore play a vital role for the whole of Europe. In choosing fresh fibre, you are thus helping to keep the recovered paper ecocycle working. Well done!

5 Active nature conservation

Your fifth possibility: Active nature conservation Your fifth possibility is actually the one we are most proud of. The fact that, through our way of managing the forest, we help a wide range of forest wildlife and plant species to survive. Together with our customers, we make a clear difference to nature by constantly developing our knowledge and awareness. Around 20 per cent of Holmen s total forest land is used for nature conservation purposes. We believe, for example, in doing everything we can to ensure that all the species that live in the forest can continue to do so. In addition, we cherish and develop other assets in the forest, such as outdoor pursuits and Sweden s unique right of public access. Being out in the forest is good for body and soul. Get in touch if you would like to know about some of our favourite spots.

Certificates and other useful tools To enable us to work responsibly on environmental issues and social considerations, we apply certified management systems. We report on our work based on the guidelines of the international organisation GRI. ISO international standard for environmental management systems. ISO energy management system. EU Ecolabel the EU s official ecolabelling system. FSC (C020071) and PEFC certificates for chain of custody of wood raw material. Holmen is a member of the UN Global Compact.
