Learn why and how native plants and insects support the life systems of birds, mammals and YOU. Urban plan choices are inextricably entwined with human health and well-being. It s not enough to be aesthetically pleasing. Let trees boost your bottom line with the plethora of services they provide. Let the benefits begin! Presenter(s): Holly Jones Title/ Organization: Executive Director, Indiana Urban Forest Council Biography: Holly Jones is an ISA Arborist #3470A and has a degree in Geology, a Masters in Public Administration, and 20 years of working in the non-profit sector. Her range of experiences includes research geologist, natural resource management on parks and public lands, volunteer management, project management & sustainability consulting. A trained naturalist, Holly enjoys gardening and backpacking in her spare time. She currently serves as IUFC s Executive Director and is hoping to continue to fuel the growth and expansion of the urban forest in Indiana by serving and organizing IUFC s many dedicated volunteers.

2 This place is a Zoo! Arborcare in a high traffic botanical garden. Short presentation description: Millions of public visitors and heavy use by animals poses unique challenges for Arborists caring for trees in a zoo. A brief presentation with an overview of the facility and the tree care routines followed by an extensive tour of on site trees and exhibits that serve as live examples of young trees integrated with old and the recent arborcare performed from workshop (on the day before this presentation). Specific examples of mature girdling root correction, structural pruning, diagnosis & treatment plan of tree diseases present will be visited. Andy Norman Title/Organization: Horticulturist, Arborist Indianapolis Zoo Bio: Andy Norman has worked as a horticulturist and arborist at the Indianapolis Zoo for six years. Andy's duties at the zoo include arborcare, maintaining and designing ornamental landscapes, and providing vegetation for the animal diets. Andy has a B.S. in Agriculture as well as an A.S. in Horticulture from Purdue University.

3 New tools for taming ash kickers, web spinners, and sap suckers Presentation description: Dr. Sadof will review the diagnosis and control of the worst pest species of 201; including emerald ash borer, eastern tent caterpillar, aphids and scale insects. He will also review how the combined flood and drought of 2015 is making 2016 a critical year for protecting trees. Title/ Organization: Dr. Cliff Sadoff Professor, Purdue University Biography: Dr. Sadof works at Purdue University to develop tools to help landscape and tree professionals make better decisions. His latest work includes The Purdue Tree Doctor, and the Emerald Ash Borer Cost Calculator.

4 Work Putting Indianapolis' Public Tree Inventory to Presentation description: How did a limited pilot study, funded with only $26,000 of local money, turn into a nearly $900,000 project that has transformed the management of the City's urban forestry assets? The information from the recent public tree inventory of Indianapolis has become a powerful tool that has improved the analytical and management capabilities of the urban forest management program. It has also positively improved maintenance efficiency, citizen communication, and budget planning. This presentation will highlight the lessons learned during the development, execution, and follow-through of this long-term and extensive inventory project. Attendees will come away with ideas for implementation of Level 1 and Level 2 assessments; learn how to incorporate ISA risk ratings into their municipal forest management program; and be reaffirmed that by utilizing the standardized data and information derived from a community tree inventory, urban foresters can transition to a pro-active maintenance program. Bill Kincius Title/ Organization: Manager of Urban Forestry, City of Indianapolis, Department of Public Works Biography Bill Kincius is the Manager of Urban Forestry for Indianapolis DPW. He currently serves as President-Elect of the Indiana Chapter of the ASLA, and has recently served as President of the Indiana Urban Forest Council. Previous work experiences have been with private practice firms, local municipalities, and private institutions of higher education. Bill enjoys utilizing his background as a licensed landscape architect and certified arborist to better the urban environment and encourage greater collaboration between arborists and designers.

5 A New Spectrum of Marion County Canopy Data Content and Accuracy Presentation description: The purpose of GIS is to communicate a huge amount of information in an easy and intuitive visual representation. Tree planting program and tree related GIS at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB); basic functions of GIS at KIB include: Tree GPS/GIS records, Reporting, Relocation of trees for maintenance, Research, Strategy. USDA Forest Service and University of Vermont Spatial Analysis Lab Urban Tree Canopy Assessment: How it came to fruition, methodology and analysis, interesting findings. Utilizing the findings for strategic planning at KIB and other orgs/individuals Bob Neary Title/ Organization: Project Manager and Staff Geographer Biography: Bob s GIS work started in 2009 as a Keep Indianapolis Beautiful volunteer overhauling how newly planted trees are geolocated. In 2012, his work earned the creation of a GIS Analyst and Project Manager position with the nonprofit. He recently became an ISA Certified Arborist (IN-3478A), and his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from the University of Dayton still gets use instructing and educating volunteers while managing one GreenSpace installation each year with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.

6 Risky Business: Trees and the City- Are my trees safe? Presentation description: Are my Trees Safe? That is literally a million-dollar question. All levels of government are facing financial crisis which has an impact on the tree managers and the overall tree management plan. The underlying question, is what are we willing to risk to maintain and enjoy the many benefits of our urban trees and how to protect your community. Lindsey Purcell Title/ Organization: Urban Forestry Specialist, Purdue University Biography: Lindsey Purcell, Urban Forestry Specialist for Purdue Cooperative Extension and Instructor in the Forestry and Natural Resources Department at Purdue University, has been involved in the landscape industry and urban forestry for over twenty-five years. As an ISA Certified Arborist, he has served Indiana communities as a landscape and tree professional in municipal and private enterprise. His educational background includes an A.S. degree in Horticulture from Vincennes University, a B.S. degree from Purdue University School of Agriculture and a M.Ed. degree from Indiana State University. Additionally, he holds the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification and is a certified instructor by the International Society of Arboriculture.

7 Examples, Strategies & Techniques for Arborcare in an Urban Zoo Presentation description: A brief overview followed by a walk thru of the park facility examining over 50 trees followed by a hands-on demonstration and guided practical experience for urban tree care professionals and volunteers. Jerome Delbridge Title/ Organization: ISA Certified Arborist IN-3334A / Tree-O Indianapolis Tree Service Biography: Jerome Delbridge is an ISA Certified Arborist who has worked as a professional community arborist in central Indiana for over 8 years. His expertise and guidance have helped hundreds of volunteers and many professionals alike. His passion for proper tree planting and care have made him a celebrated speaker and a sought after reference for many tree related issues. He is an arborist with Tree-O Tree Service in Indianapolis.
