3 Vision, strategies and programs in the community Resource Management Strengthen the organization for the: Management of forests and mountains Improving Livelihoods Health program Sustainable use of natural resources Ensure continuous benefits Protecting and nurturing Pala wan culture Education and values formation

4 Resource Management Acitivities Sustainable harvesting protocols for ntfps such as almaciga resin and seeds. Resource management plan included in the Ancestral Land Management Plan (ALMP). Establishment of native tree nurseries and conduct of tree planting to protect 4 watershed area sources of our water spring systems. Rainforestation and participation in the National Greening Program (NGP)

5 Management of BERTAS- traditional conservation and sacred areas - Indigenous conserved areas. - Activities such as cutting of trees and shifting cultivation are strictly prohibited in these areas. - BERTAS help in the conservation of different biodiversity species located inside the ancestral domain. - It also help in providing clean water and prevention of landslide and soil erosion. - Management activities: - Monitoring of forest activities. - Mapping of BERTAS areas - Promotion of BERTAS to the MMPL and LGUs.

6 Management of Uma or traditional shifting cultivation

7 Challenges In 2015, we were threatened by a proposed municipal policy that will prevent us from practicing our Uma. March- proposed local municipal resolution to implement NO BURNING POLICY in all areas. Our organization led the dialogue and conduct of forum to discuss the concerns against traditional farming system. The municipal Mayor decided to cancel the proposed NO BURNING POLICY. SPABP continues to strengthen the management of traditional farming system.

8 Challenges Passing on the IKSPs on forest management practices including sustainable harvesting of forest products and management of BERTAS to the younger generation. - -Recently formed a youth group. Complicated processes and policies that will support indigenous forest livelihood such as permitting, audit and technical reports for small enterprises. Discrimination against indigenous people and their traditional activities such as capacity to manage their resources and traditional farming system.

9 Recommendations Policies and programs that will strengthen the recognition of rights of indigenous communities in the sustainable management of ancestral domain including traditional farming system. Local policy to recognize traditional farming system Active participation of IPs in protected area management IEC on IPRA and IP related policies among government agencies Support to communities that will promote traditional forest livelihood activities Simplify ntfp permitting policies Capacity building Culturally appropriate livelihoods
