7 Performance Indicator Description Frequency /cover of bracken and invasive scrub Frequency and abundance of bracken and native tree / shrub seedlings and saplings Frequency / cover of dwarf shrubs Up to 5 dwarf shrubs (including Calluna vulgaris, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, V. myrtillus, Empetrum nigrum, Erica tetralix, Erica cinerea, or Myrica gale were selected. Total cover of all dwarf shrubs present was also recorded Frequency / cover of Sphagnum The estimated cover of Sphagnum spp. was recorded within each quadrat using 13 percentage cover classes Cover of bare peat The estimated cover of exposed bare peat was recorded within each quadrat using thirteen percentage cover classes Frequency / cover of typical graminoids The estimated total frequency / cover of typical graminoids (including Carex spp., Deschampsia cespitosa, Eriophorum spp., Juncus squarrosus, Molinia caerulea and Scirpus cespitosus) was recorded within each quadrat using nine percentage cover classes Frequency of desirable species This performance indicator looks at the frequency and abundance of species characteristic of unimproved grassland Frequency / cover of purple moor grass The estimated cover of Molinia caerulea (Purple moor grass) was recorded within each quadrat using nine percentage cover classes. Frequency / cover of desirable species For each habitat patch monitored a list of four desirable species present at the site was drawn up. Estimated combined cover of these species was recorded within each quadrat, using percentage cover categories, e.g. Narthecium ossifragum, D. rotundifolia, Menyanthes trifoliate.
