3 Total area ha. Project area ha State Nature Zoological- Botanical Reserve (since 1992); SPA (since 2004): Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) Spotted Crake (Porzana porzana) Common Crane (Grus grus) Footer Text 6/29/2014 3

4 Nearly 75 % of the area is managed by the State forest enterprises (Šiauliai FE and Tytuvėnai FE); 200 ha of the area is still used for peat extraction; Tyruliai Bog SPA covers heavily destroyed peatland: 40 % of the total amount of the peat is excavated; All the territory is drained; Site still supports important populations of threatened bird species. 8 Main project objective is to ensure favourable conservation status of the priority bird species (Bittern, Spotted Crake and migratory Common Cranes). The objective will be achieved through: improvement of the habitat conditions and increasing their capacity; restoration of the hydrological regime (habitats) in dry peat areas; supporting natural succession of the sedge-grass communities ; reducing of the bird disturbance; maintaining fire prevention scheme; raising public awareness in restoration of destroyed peat-bog. Tyruliai-LIFE 6/29/2014 8

9 MAIN ACTIVITIES: Construction of the set of simple dams on the drainage ditches in order to restore destroyed hydrological regime on large area of the bog (more than 500 ha; dams); Removing of the woody vegetation in formerly open bog areas including dry peat-land sites used for re-wetting action (a couple of Actions); Proper management of the reed stands using two different methods (two different Actions); Implementation of fireprevention measures improvement of the local roads for fire-engine, setting bounds for public traffic, re-wetting (a couple of Actions). 10 MAIN ACTIVITIES: Construction of the set of simple dams on the drainage ditches in order to restore destroyed hydrological regime on large area of the bog (more than 500 ha; dams); Removing of the woody vegetation in formerly open bog areas including dry peat-land sites used for re-wetting action (a couple of Actions); Proper management of the reed stands using two different methods (two different Actions); Implementation of fireprevention measures improvement of the local roads for fire-engine, setting bounds for public traffic, re-wetting (a couple of Actions). 12 MAIN ACTIVITIES: Construction of the set of simple dams on the drainage ditches in order to restore destroyed hydrological regime on large area of the bog (more than 500 ha; dams); Removing of the woody vegetation in formerly open bog areas including dry peat-land sites used for re-wetting action (a couple of Actions); Proper management of the reed stands using two different methods (two different Actions); Implementation of fireprevention measures improvement of the local roads for fire-engine, setting bounds for public traffic, re-wetting (a couple of Actions). 13 EXPECTED RESULTS: Increasing of the breeding populations of the SPA trigger bird species: Bittern (> 20 males) & Spotted Crake (>30 males), staging migratory cranes (>1000 birds) as well as other threatened bird species; Hydrological regime restored in the area of more than 500 ha with following regeneration of the bog vegetation; Habitat capacity of more than 500 ha of former open sedge-grass areas as well as reed stands improved; Fire prevention (prevents also habitat loss because of regular peat fires) measures implemented for all area of the Tyruliai bog.
