Country report Iceland Arnór Snorrason Icelandic Forest Research Icelandic Forest Service

Overview About the Icelandic Forest Inventory (IFI) Development and new projects since the Kauna meeting 2013: 1. New map of the natural birch woodland 2. Changes in greenhouse gas (GHG) estimate 3. Using NFI data in CO 2 sequestration prognosis 4. Using NFI data in regional wood production prognosis 5. Estimating biomass of tree species for the European Joint Research Center.

Icelandic Forest Inventory (IFI) A project at the Icelandic Forest Research (IFR) Mógilsá IFR a one of three divisions of the Icelandic State Forest Service IFI Personnel: Arnór Snorrason, Björn Traustason and Bjarki Þór Kjartansson other IFR staff participate on various subprojects of IFI

Ongoing and finished main projects First NFI cycle (2005-9): The country wide sample plot inventory in both cultivated forest and natural birch woodland finished in year Second NFI cycle ( ): Re-measurement of cultivated forest. Remapping of natural birch woodland ( ). Third cycle of cultivated forest and the second cycle of natural birch woodland started this summer 2015 and will last to 2019.

No. of plots in NBW : 210 No. of plots in CF : 810

1.New map of the natural birch woodland The are of natural birch woodland has increased: estimated 1380 km 2 in 1989 estimated 1510 km 2 in 2014 increase of 130 km 2 increase of the natural birch woodland is confirmed for the first time an inversion from the 1100 years deforestation

Changes in greenhouse gas (GHG) estimate Iceland is still participating in the Kyoto protocol Iceland as Norway joined the EU-bubble Bilateral agreement to EU did allow Iceland to account C- sequestration from afforestation and revegetation as major mitigating effort. A reporting in a new commitment period started last winter ( ) with great increase in data delivery and working load: New reporting rules and guidlines: 2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol Forest Management is mandatory Reference level for both ARD and FM has to be re-estimated More issues to take into account: Carbon Equivalent Forest Conversion (CEFC) Natural Disturbance Harvest Wood Product (mandatory reporting)

Gg CO2 Using NFI data in CO2 sequestration prognosis Net sequestration of afforestation since 1990 in CO2 -equivalents S1 Uchanged afforestation rate 1092 ha annually S2: Afforestation doubled S4: Afforestation quadrupled S1: CO2 in roundwood S2: CO2 in roundwood S4: CO2 in roundwood

Using NFI data in regional wood production prognosis 63 NFI plots of 145 where used as a source data to estimate area, current and future wood stock in the Fljótsdalshérað region (see Heidarsson).
