There are no major roads within earshot: the perfect antidote to busy lives. Although Loch Lomond is a magnet for tourists, this particular corner of the national park beats to its own drum. Artagnan Wood is located deep in the countryside around Drymen, a quaint tourist town sporting a lovely village square, as well as providing plenty of places to eat and stay at. The greater surrounding forestry of Finnery Woodland encompasses about 70 acres in total and benefits from an extremely durable stone track throughout. Artagan Wood is quite open and young woodland on the whole and it is relatively straight forward to navigate; there are some pockets of rhododendron that can be skirted around. A short distance into the woods from the parking area sit two benches, just waiting for a weary or contemplative visitor. This is an extremely attractive woodland that has regenerated in a fantastic and most natural manner. Generally younger woodland is quite regimented with a single crop or planting dominating the character. Artagan Wood is a refreshing discovery of natural woodland that is improving year upon year. As well as its diversity, it also benefits from a fast flowing stream running along the northern boundary. Access to fresh water can be important for many woodland owners whether for animals, young saplings or every woodlanders essential item...the kettle. In a former life this particular wood was managed for clay shooting and this has brought its own benefits with carefully planned and managed "corridors" that add diversity and difference. Where parts of the wood have been cleared, there is an abundance of heather and colourful mosses adding to the intense diversity of the woods. A common visitor is the Snipe of the woods ; Woodcock is an elusive, wading bird found mainly in woodlands. It is a thick-bodied, pigeonsized bird with a long bill. Its beautiful plumage provides almost perfect camouflage when it is on the ground, motionless in leaf litter. Rarely seen on the ground, it is the rufous rump that is most striking when the bird is flushed into flight. Woodcock is a crepuscular bird, most active at dawn and dusk. It feeds by probing its bill into damp ground, eating mainly earthworms and beetles and one to look out for when visiting the woods. Surrounding Area Stirling with its beautiful castle is just a 30 minute drive away with direct links from there across to Edinburgh. The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

At the village of Gartocham turn right onto School Road. Turn left onto Auchincarroch Road. Turn left onto Finnery Road. The entrance will be on your left. There is a small woodlands for sale sign attached to the fence. On the other side of the driveway is the nameplate Greystonelea. Continue up this driveway for 500m and the woods begin on your right hand side before the buildings. If you miss the entrance you will reach Finnery House on your left. Turn round and retrace your steps. Sat nav will get you to Finnery Road but will not get you to the entance to the woods. Boundaries: Boundaries are marked by purple painted posts and by a stock fence on the northern boundary.
