1 Revision Date: Examiner: Ryan Adamczyk Legal Description: T0 R1W, Sections 1, 13, & 4 Compartment Review Presentation Cadillac Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County ,73 Lake Management Area: Lake County Moraines Identified Planning Goals: Recreation, the River runs through the compartment. The area receives heavy use especially on the River. Soil and topography: The topography in this compartment ranges from rolling hills to bluffs around the pine river. Soils in this area are Rubicon, Montcalm and Graycalm. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: This Compartment is in a large area of public land. The compartment is solid state ownership with no in holdings. To the west there is a large area of state ownership. North of the compartment is a large area of the Manistee National forest. To the south and east are areas of private ownership. Unique Natural Features: Near this compartment the Red-shouldered hawk has nested to the East. The Northern goshawks have nested to west and north. Bald Eagles nest to the south. There is Potential for red-shouldered hawk and goshawk in this compartment. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: No known sites in the compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: The pine river is a natural river which effects management adjacent to the river. There are also influence zones along state road and near the campgrounds Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Maintain the integrity of the River and the developed recreational facilities. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Featured wildlife species in this Management Area are diverse reflecting the wide range of habitat types present. Featured Species of wildlife include American Martin, American Woodcock, Beaver, Black Bear, Pileated woodpecker, Red-headed woodpecker, Ruffed Grouse, Snowshoe Hare, Wild Turkey, and White Tailed deer. Most of these species benefit from young forest and open types while some require some old trees for foraging and nest/den sites. Maintaining the opening types and balancing harvests with a diverse assortment of age classes in the timber types will meet the goals for these species. The river corridor provides a focal point for some older forest conditions while aspen stands will provide a variety of younger and mid-age stands. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of an end moraine of coarse-textured till and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Pennsylvanian Saginaw Formation and the Mississippian Bayport Limestone and Michigan Formation. The Saginaw is quarried for clay, the Bayport for limestone and the Michigan for gypsum in other areas of the State. A gravel pit is located one mile to the east and there is good potential. The nearest oil and gas production is the one well abandoned Luther Field located five miles to the east. The Field produced over 8,000 BO from the Traverse Limestone. The compartment is not currently leased for oil and gas exploration. Vehicle Access: A forest road access plan is detailed on the compartment map. Identified are state and county roads as well as forest roads and trails under the jurisdiction of the DNR. Survey Needs: 10/3/018 9:6:36 AM - Page 1 of POLEYN

2 None at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: This compartment contains Silver Creek and Lincoln Bridge campgrounds. The area also contains a lot of trails including the Lincoln hills motorcycle trail, the Lincoln hills ORV route and the silver creek pathway. Canoeing and other uses of the pine river are the most common summer activities in the compartment. Hunting and trapping are also common activities in the area. Fire Protection: With the heavy recreation use in the area, there is the possibility of human caused starts within the compartment. Some areas also would be difficult access for fire equipment, due to the River corridor. BET Additional Compartment Information: None at this time. The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total by Cover Type and Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed s No Limiting Factors Proposed s With Limiting Factors Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system 10/3/018 9:6:36 AM - Page of POLEYN

18 Cadillac Mgt. Unit Compartment: Year of Entry 00 Report 6 EXISTING SPECIAL CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS * This is a list of SCA's for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to the Special Conservation Area Map for locations of the below listed Conservation Areas. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA HCVA Cold Water Stream Riparian Area Natural Rivers A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 10. A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. There are two Natural Rivers datasets which are derived from spatial buffers set from an established and approved distance from the river centerlines. The Natural Rivers Zoning District is a 400 foot buffer for most Natural Rivers. The Vegetative Buffer ranges from 5 to 100 feet. To view specific Zoning Districts and Vegetative Buffers for each Natural River see the table located on the I:\Documentation\GDSE data folder. 10/3/018 9:6: AM - Page 1 of 1
