1 Collacott Wood, Devon - About 6 acres, 49,000 Collacott Wood sits at the top of the Mole valley and near the quaint village of Chittlehamholt. Its elevated position allows plenty of light through the canopy of mature oak trees. This creates good growing opportunities for the lower layers of hazel and ground flora. Whilst the shaded areas are dominated by flowers such as bluebells, lesser celandine and the wood anemone. Collacott Wood is listed as Ancient semi-natural woodland on the Government's Magic database. This means that this woodland has existed at least since 1600 AD. This woodland shows many signs of its longevity with flower species, like bluebells, that take many years to establish. Wildlife thrives in the habitat that this woodland provides. A joy for bird watching, species seen within the woodland include greater spotted woodpeckers, tree creepers, nuthatches and bluetits to name a few. Badgers use Collacott Wood to snuffle with their long snouts for bulbs and earth worms. There are good open views to the west over the fields and you can often spot deer grazing on the lush grass. The name Collacott Wood is from a local place name of this part of Devon steeped in history. Many Devon names have roots in the past, from the earliest Damnonian (Devon tribe of Britons) colonisers. Saxon, Celt or even Neolithic people created a small plot for a dwelling from the wooded countryside using basic tools. Colla is likely to be an old family name and 'Cote', or it s derivative Cott is a common suffix of Devon names describing small and humble dwellings. Cots are mainly associated with farms which expanded from these original steads and often lead to the surname of the family living there, thus Collacott. The woodland adjoins the village of Chittlehamholt, formerly a hamlet of Chittlehampton. The village originated as a forest clearing made by the villagers (the meaning of a 'holt'). Nearby the river Mole provides excellent fishing opportunities for both trout and salmon. Local facilities include The Exeter Inn, the local village pub, the nearby High Bullen Hotel - a luxurious place to stay with golf, tennis and day licences for fishing. If you fancy a treat when visiting your woodland, perhaps as an alternative to camping, the comfortable Mole Cottage is just a 10 minute walk away. The King's Nympton train station is a few miles from the woodland. The station is part of the Tarka Line - famous for being one of the most beautiful train journeys in the country. The rail line links directly to Exeter. Mole Wood lies about 8 miles south of Barnstaple - the gateway to explore the rugged coast of north Devon with its many beautiful beaches such as Westward Ho! and the popular surfing beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe. Location OS Landranger: OS No 191 Grid ref: SS Nearest post code: EX37 9HF Directions - Travelling from Exeter or Barnstaple follow the A377 Barnstaple road until you are near King's Nympton railway station and then take the Fortescue Cross Newnham Junction turning onto the B3226 towards South Molton. - Stay on this road, go over a bridge and past Head Mill Trout Farm, after about two and a half miles you will see a 'Woodlands for Sale' sign on your left hand side and the entrance to the wood. - Just past the entrance on the right hand side is a lay-by. It is best to park here to view so as not to block the entrance to the woodland. - Walk through the main woodland entrance via the public footpath gate and follow the main track directly in front of you. Please note that the tracks giving access to, and within, Collacott Wood are not public rights of way which ensures the purchasers privacy. - At the fork in the track take the right hand track, climbing carefully over the wooden gate and continuing up the stoned track. - Pass a parking area on your left, take a sharp right hand bend and keep on the main track for another 200 metres until you reach another parking area. The owner of Collacott Wood will get a key to the main gate allowing them to drive up the track to this car park. - Follow the main track down the hill for around 10 metres until you reach the entrance to Collacott Wood indicated by a ride stop with the 'Collacott Wood' name sign. - From the M5 leave at junction 27 and take the A361 towards Tiverton and Barnstaple. At the roundabout after about 23 miles take the exit to South Molton. - In South Molton turn onto New Road (signposted towards Witheridge) and then turn right onto Mill Street. - Then turn left onto South Street joining the B3226 towards the Crediton road. - Stay on the B3226 for around 7 miles until you pass 'Mole Cottage' pottery and B&B on your right. - Shortly after this park in the lay-by on the left hand side of the road by a sign for the High Bullen Hotel. This ensures the woodland entrance on the opposite side of the road is kept clear. - Across the road you will see a 'woodlands for sale' sign. This is the main entrance to the woodland. From here follow the directions above from the point of entering the main woodland entrance via the public footpath gate. - Satnav/GPS note: the postcode EX37 9HF is for the point shown by the red dot on the location map. 3 All boundaries are indicated with green markings on posts and trees. The northern boundary is the edge of a shared forestry path. The eastern and southern boundaries are lines of posts. The western boundary is a hedge bank adjoining a field.
