Existing Action Plans Action Plan for the protection and restoration of the European sturgeon Acipenser sturio

Harmonized recovery strategy (see PAN EU AP)

Process of development Results from the European Sturgeon Conference Input from participants Recognition of conservation needs Submitted to Bern Secretariat final draft (Oct) National Bern focal points 2nd draft Technical experts (N=40 ) 1st draft developed by WWF and WSCS Adoption of Action Plan Nov 27, 2018 Start Implementation Establish coordination body Agree on responsibilities for coordination & monitoring

Objectives of the Plan (1) Stop the decline of existing populations Fishing prohibited and enforcement against poaching effective Bycatch assessed and eliminated (2) Actively support populations through ex situ living gene banks Ex situ stocks established to secure genetic diversity of all sturgeon populations Reproduction and release programmes implemented Regional (basin wide) coherence is ensured

Objectives of the Plan (3) Sturgeon habitats protected and restored Existing habitats identified and protected Habitat restoration options identified & pilots implemented (4) Sturgeon migration secured or facilitated No further migration obstacles build in key rivers Existing obstacles identified and feasibility for passage solutions verified and prioritized (5) Ensure monitoring of sturgeon populations (6) Eliminate illegal trade of all sturgeon products

Objectives of the Plan (7) Secure adequate funding and regulations to enable implementation of AP (8) Secure support from actors and stakeholders (9) Monitor and evaluate AP implementation Sturgeon stocks are shared between countries One country alone can not save sturgeons International coordination and cooperation is a key factor of success

For a greater goal! Thank you very much for a constructive and lively meeting! We kindly ask you to support the adoption of the Action Plan and mandate the Secretariat to engage in the coordination and monitoring of its implementation!
