1 David G. Ray 3025 Banks Road, Tallahassee, FL (850) EDUCATION Ph.D. Candidate University of Maine, Orono, ME expected 2009 M.S. (Silviculture) SUNY-ESF, Syracuse, NY 1997 B.S. (Forestry) University of Maine, Orono, ME 1993 EMPLOYMENT Forestry Scientist, Tall Timbers Research Station, Tallahassee, FL. 7/08-present. I am in the process of developing a research program centered on ecologically based management of natural upland pine systems. Focal areas include: strategies for transitioning from even- to multiaged management, incorporating natural stand dynamics into management regimes, and making reliable predictions of stand development. Teaching/Research Assistant, University of Maine, Orono, ME. 9/04 to 6/08. Using long-term data sets and stand dynamics models to assess the influence of forest composition and structure on production and carbon storage of natural and planted forests (Dissertation project). Teaching assistant for integrated silviculture and forest ecology field lab with occasional lecturing responsibilities in silviculture. Research Associate, The Woods Hole Research Center, Woods Hole, MA, 6/00 to 7/04. Member of multidisciplinary research team investigating the role of various disturbance agents (drought and fire) on forest structure and function in the Brazilian Amazon. Primary responsibilities included study design and oversight, and data management and analysis. Two years during this period ( ) were spent living and working in Brazil. Adjunct Faculty, Ranger School, SUNY-ESF, Wanakena, NY, fall semester Primary instructor for courses in dendrology and air photo interpretation. Preparation and delivery of classroom lectures and supporting labs for students enrolled in an associates degree program in forest technology. Assisted with field labs for other courses, and mentored students. Research/Teaching Assistant, SUNY-ESF, Syracuse, NY, 6/95-5/99. Developed a predictive model of early stand development for naturally regenerated northern hardwood stands in the Adirondack Mountains (Thesis project). This study was later expanded to describe the generalized response of this forest type to even-aged reproduction method cutting. Responsible for teaching a lab section in an applied course on forest soils. Forester, Southern New England Woodland Services, Foster, RI, 1/94 to 4/95. Forester with an integrated forestry services company. Primary functions included interacting with small private landowners and developing management plans. Responsible for timber cruising and marking, and harvest layout and sale administration.
