Regional pilot projects in Northwest Russia Pilot project activities include field studies and environmental monitoring preparing official justification documents for establishing PAs conducting public consultations providing information and raising awareness High conservation value (HCV) areas under threat identified in previous studies, such as Gap analysis in Northwest Russia Three projects support establishment of planned PAs threatened by human impacts, leased for logging companies Developing the monitoring of established protected areas One new proposal for protection Implemented by regional experts regional authorities, scientific organizations, nature conservation NGOs

Regional pilot projects in Northwest Russia All the areas are extremely valuable internationally All pilot projects support the goal of BPAN - to establish a representative and effectively managed network of protected areas in the Barents Region

The Komi Republic, 2012 Field studies have shown that the territory is characterized by undisturbed, or slightly disturbed, lichen pine forests that provide food for reindeers during snowy winters mires where the animals find refuge from midges in summer virgin spruce forests along small streams as refuge Komi Science Center has made protection proposal for the Ministry of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Komi Republic, basing on the field inventories Priority area for future co-operation between Arkhangelsk Region and the Komi Republic

Arkhangelsk Region, Planned Dvinsky Forest nature reserve (zakaznik) Europe s largest area of old-growth (mainly spruce) forests diverse landscapes and habitats for rare species leased for forestry companies Main threats: clearcuttings and fragmentation FSC main tool for negotiation and protection Implemented by the Centre of Nature Management and Environmental Monitoring of Arkhangelsk Region and WWF Russia

Nenets Autonomus Okrug, 2012 Monitoring biological diversity in the Nizhnepechorsky nature reserve (zakaznik) Area is rich with habitats and other conservation values: e.g. rivers, lakes, floodplains, herb-rich and Carex meadows, lichen tundras, mire complexes and rare fish Internationally important area for migration birds Threats: gas industry, poaching, building, reindeer herding

Nenets Autonomus Okrug Monitoring biological diversity in the Nizhnepechorsky nature reserve (zakaznik) Aim of the study was to evaluate and predict changes of the environment effected by natural and anthropogenic factors. Work included investigations of landscapes, flora and ornithology. Study produced new information on the state of nature reserve, and gives recommendations to improve protected area management. Protection regulations should be strengthened, borders should be extended, recultivation after gas activity should be organized.
