SAULT COLLEGE OF APPLIED ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO C O U R S E O U T L I N E Curse Title: Frest Measurement Thery Cde N.: OEL850 Semester: Prgram: Frestry Technician Authr: Bb Currell Date: January 2010 Dated: Previus Outline Apprved: Ttal Credits: 2 Prerequisite(s): Length f Curse: 14 weeks Ttal Credit Hurs: 32 Cpyright 2010 The Sault Cllege f Applied Arts & Technlgy Reprductin f this dcument by any means, in whle r in part, withut prir written permissin f Sault Cllege f Applied Arts & Technlgy is prhibited. Fr additinal infrmatin, please cntact the Cntinuing Educatin Department, (705) , Ext, I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This curse prvides an intrductin t Frest Measurement; the measurement f trees and frests. It will intrduce the thery f measuring; tree diameter, height, age and frest density r basal area. Methds f measuring these tree attributes will be described and equipment use explained. Methds f estimating tree diameter, height and basal area using

husehld materials will be prvided. The final mdule f the curse prvides an explanatin f hw frest measurements are made, cmpiled and displayed in Ontari s Frest Resurce Inventry. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES AND ELEMENTS OF THE PERFORMANCE: Upn successful cmpletin f this curse, the student will demnstrate the ability t: 1. Measure, classify and recrd tree diameters using accepted equipment and techniques. Explain the reasns fr measuring tree diameter. Shw the standard lcatin (breast height) where diameter measurements are made n trees exhibiting different stem characteristics. Assign trees t different diameter classes if given actual diameter measurements t 0.1 cm. accuracy. Calculate the basal area f trees if given their diameters. Explain the use f a diameter tape and parallel calipers t measure tree diameter. Use a standard measuring tape t measure tree diameter. Describe methds f estimating tree diameter. 2. Measure and recrd tree heights. Illustrate five different types f tree heights it is pssible t measure. Describe at least five methds f measuring tree height. Calculate tree height frm measurements made using different measurement scales n a manual clinmeter. Describe hw t measure tree heights using a Suunt, Haga, and height ple. Cnstruct and crrectly use a staff hypsmeter. Describe hw t minimize pssible errrs when measuring tree height. 3. Explain hw a tree grws, hw tree age can be accurately measured and describe practical applicatins f tree age measurement. Describe hw a tree grws in height and diameter. Distinguish differences between annual rings f cnifers, ring prus hardwds and diffuse prus hardwds.

Demnstrate hw tree age can be measured by cunting annual rings. Explain hw t carry ut destructive and nn-destructive sampling f tree age. Identify cmmn prblems encuntered when increment bring trees and explain hw t minimize these prblems. Describe fur applicatins f tree aging. Explain hw dendrchrnlgy is carried ut t date past events. 4. Measure, recrd and explain the imprtance f basal area as an indicatr f frest density. Determine the basal area f a tree f a knwn diameter. Calculate the basal area f trees per hectare given inventry infrmatin. Shw the principle f calculating basal area thrugh the use f angle gauges. List the types f instruments which can be used t measure basal area per hectare f a frest. Explain hw t crrectly use a wedge prism t measure basal area. Estimate the basal area f a frest sample using yur thumb as an angle gauge. 5. Explain hw Frest Resurce Inventry grund plts are measured, their data cmpiled and summaries displayed in Ontari's FRI system. List the three cmpnent parts f the Ontari Frest Resurce Inventry. Explain why the accurate measurement f FRI grund plts is an essential part f preparing an accurate inventry f the frests f Ontari. List and describe the infrmatin cllected in FRI grund plts. Calculate the basal area per hectare and species cmpsitin f a frest area if given cmplete tally infrmatin frm FRI grund plts fr that area. Determine whether data cllected in FRI grund plts is acceptably accurate cmpared with audit data. Read an FRI basemap, describe its UTM reference number and lcate a spt t within 100 metres accuracy if given its UTM c-rdinates. Decde the infrmatin cntained in an FRI stand descriptin table. Prepare an FRI stand descriptin table entry fr a frest stand if prvided with FRI grund plt infrmatin TOPICS 1. Measuring Tree Diameter Reasns fr measuring tree diameter.

The lcatin where tree diameter is measured n trees exhibiting different stem characteristics and slpe psitins. Tree diameter classes. Intrductin t tree stem basal area. Measuring diameters with dendrmeters. Measuring diameters with a standard measuring tape. 2. Measuring Tree Height Types f tree height measurements. Methds f measuring tree height. Calculating tree heights frm clinmeter readings: - use f the degree scale, % scale, 15 and 20 scales n a variety f instruments. Measuring tree heights using Suunt and Haga clinmeters. Making and using a staff hypsmeter t estimate tree heights. 3. Tree Age Hw trees grw in height and diameter. Identifying annual grwth rings f cnifers, ring prus and diffuse prus hardwds. Tree aging techniques. Care and use f an increment brer t determine tree age. Cmmn prblems encuntered when increment bring trees and slutins t these prblems. Applicatins f tree aging. Dendrchrnlgy 4. Measuring Frest Density Descriptin f tree basal area and basal area per hectare. Imprtance f frest basal area per hectare infrmatin. Calculating basal area using angle gauges. Using a wedge prism. Estimating basal area using yur thumb. 5. The Ontari Frest Resurce Inventry (FRI) Intrductin t the Ontari Frest Resurce Inventry System. FRI grund plts: - infrmatin cllected in grund plts - cmpleting stand descriptin table entries - calculating stand basal area/ha., stcking and site class frm grund plt

data - grund plt data cllectin standards FRI maps and Stand Data Tables - FRI basemap reference numbers - Reading UTM (Universal Transverse Mercatr) crdinates - FRI mapping symbls - Nrmal Yield Tables - FRI Stand Data Table and map descriptins IV. REQUIRED RESOURCES/TEXTS/MATERIALS: Nne V. EVALUATION PROCESS/GRADING SYSTEM: Online Tests (2 x 20%) 40% Assignments (5 x 10%) 50% Discussins (5 x 2%) 10% Minimum passing grade is 50%. Yur final grade will be assigned as a percentage. Yur hme cllege will determine the letter grade. The percentage received fr the curse will be used t calculate yur letter grade based n Sault Cllege standards nly if yu wish t apply this curse twards yur diplma in Natural Resurces at Sault Cllege. VI. SPECIAL NOTES Special Needs: If yu are a student with special needs (e.g. physical limitatins, visual impairments, hearing impairments, r learning disabilities), yu are encuraged t discuss required accmmdatins with yur instructr and/r yur registering cllege Disability Services Office. If yu registered at Sault Cllege, visit Rm E1204 r call (705) Ext s that supprt services can be arranged fr yu. Retentin f Curse Outlines: It is the respnsibility f the student t retain all curse utlines fr pssible future use in acquiring advanced standing at ther pstsecndary institutins. The prfessr reserves the right t change the infrmatin cntained in this curse utline depending n the needs f the learner and the availability f resurces.
