1 Seeds Reading Part 2 Instructor: Terri Cummings Date: June 25, 2012 Course Title: Plants in Your Life Specific Topic: Seeds Reading Cornell Notes, Stump the Teacher Reading Assignment: From Introductory Horticulture Section 3, Unit 6, page Exclude sections not on Cornell Notes page. Performance Objectives: Standards: After completion of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Identify the functions of the parts of the seed and the functions of each 2. Prepare a medium for seeds, sow seeds, and provide proper conditions for germination. 3. Explain the hardening off process for seedlings and 4 inch pots. 4. Sow seeds manually. Reading Key Ideas and Details 2. Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; trace the text s explanation or depiction of a complex process, phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of the text. 3. Follows precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks, attending to special cases or exceptions defined in the text. CTEK Assessment 1. Lab Identifying the parts of the seed (dissection peanut and corn) 2. Lab prepare a seed tray for seeding manually. 3. Beginning activity explain how to harden off plants. Materials: Handout Cornell Notes sheet for reading Lab handout dissection of seeds (corn and peanut seeds) Lab handout preparing a seed try for seeding manually (seedling mix, plug tray, tray) Handout explain the process of hardening off

2 Procedure: Entire Class: Introduction and Method of activating prior knowledge After defining the vocabulary for the chapter we will move on to reading the section in the chapter that relates to seeds. Individual: 1. Read pages in Section 3, Unit 6 of Introductory Horticulture. 2. Using the Cornell Notes, summarize each section. 3. As you read the section think of questions you might have that will Stump the Teacher. Entire Class: Come back together. Go over each sections until Germination medium students share their summaries of the sections in the text. Individual/Group Lab Identifying the parts of the seed. Materials corn seed and peanut seed/bean seed Scotch tape Entire Class (Day 2) Come back together and continue with going over the sections of the text with students sharing their summaries (this will give those that need extra time the night to finish their reading). Individual/Group Lab fill in a seed try with seedling mix Entire Class Stump the teacher with questions. Students ask questions about the reading and labs to try and stump the teacher. Application of Material: Students will apply the newly learned material to prepare a seed tray. Students will identify the parts of the seed.

3 Extension Questions: Accommodations needed: 1. What is the purpose of the seed coat on the seed? 2. How would not having a seed coat affect the seed? 3. Does it really matter what type of germination media a seed Is planted in? 4. Are all seed trays prepared the same? Explain. 5. Are all seeded sown the same? Why would this be the case? 6. How important is the watering technique of newly planted seeds? 1. Students on IEP s, ADHD or get distracted easily may use an I pod touch to help them read the assignment. 2.

Read the label on the trashcan. 1. Get your flat and plug tray. 2. Put the plug tray into the flat with the openings facing upward. Note: If it does not fit, you have the wrong size flat 3. Go in the greenhouse. Find the trashcan that says Seedling Mix on it. 4. Using this mix, fill your tray with soil. 5. Be sure to clean all excess seedling mix off the flat and plug tray. 6. Once finished, bring your filled tray into the classroom and place it at your table. 7. Check off Questions: 1. What observation can you make about the seedling mix that you used today? 2. What other supplies could we have used for this lab instead of the items we used today?
