1 Revision Date: 0-0- Stand Examiner: Jason Mittlestat Compartment Review Presentation Baraga Legal Description: Elm River Township TN, RW, Sections,,, and 0 Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County 0 0, Houghton Management Area: Central Houghton Identified Planning Goals: To maintain a healthy sustainable forest with special consideration to wildlife and fisheries habitat. Soil and topography: The topography is level to rolling. Upland soils are: Graveraet loam, Liminga fine sand, Halfaday-AuGras sands, Munising loamy fine sand, Kalkaska sand, Skanee-Gay complex (fine sandy loam and loamy sand). Wetland soils are: Lupton muck and Gay muck. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: State land borders the compartment to the south of section. Several small parcels of private ownership border the compartment throughout where some of the owners have harvested timber from their parcels, but the majority of the private owners use their land as homes or for recreational purposes, this is primarily due to the fact that the town of Winona is adjacent to the compartment in section. The remainder of the bordering land is owned by several different land management companies with primary goals of timber management. Unique Natural Features: MNFI indicates the potential for Red Shouldered Hawk, Eagle, Osprey, Great Blue Heron rookery, Goshawk, Moose and Gray Wolf in the compartment. There is also potential herbaceous species such as American shore grass, lakecress, Farwell s water-milfoil, alternate leaved water-milfoil and starwort in the lake. Loons have been observed in Lake Roland along with Eagles. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: There are some old mine shafts in the compartment. The Military Road connecting Fort Wilkins with Fort Howard (Green Bay) crossed this compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: BMP guidelines should be followed around the intermittent streams which are all tributaries leading into lake Roland and surrounding smaller lakes. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: The streams in this compartment are cold water trout streams. There is a concern about bank erosion and stream crossings. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Managing habitat for; black bear, blackburnian warbler, pileated woodpecker, ruffed grouse, northern goshawk and American marten should be considered when planning harvest specifications in this this compartment. There is also a deer wintering complex in this compartment. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of coarsetextured glacial till and glacial outwash sand & gravel and postglacial alluvium. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Precambrian Jacobsville Sandstone and the Portage Lake Volcanics subcrop below the glacial drift. The Jacobsville was previously used as a building stone and the Portage Lake has been mined for copper in this area. A gravel pit is located in Section and potential appears to be good. Abandoned copper mines and crushed basalt piles are located in the Compartment. This area was previously leased for metallic development. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: 0//0 ::0 AM - Page of RUBLEYM

2 M- is a state highway which runs through the compartment, Emily Lake Road is a county road which borders state land in Section, the Winona Tower road accesses state land in section, there is access to section 0 off the Winona road in section 0 and section may be accessed of the Twin Lakes. There is access throughout the compartment through numerous logging roads. Survey Needs: None identified at this time, will be addressed as needed in the future. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The former Copper Range Railroad now the Bill Nichols trail, crosses the compartment. The snowmobile trail from Winona to Alston also crosses part of the compartment. The large expanse of continuous forest offers excellent opportunities for large and small game hunting. There are good fishing opportunities in the surrounding area as Lakes Roland, Gerald, Bob Hall and an Un-named lake are very close as well as there tributaries and Sleepy Creek. Fire Protection: This compartment has little to no potential for a large fire with the primary cover type being northern hardwoods. Its proximity to the Twin Lakes field office will also help to keep fires small. Additional Compartment Information: The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system 0//0 ::0 AM - Page of RUBLEYM

Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 00. A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 0. A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. 0//0 :0: AM - Page of
