2 Our Commitment to Sustainable Practices Working Smarter and Greener We advance seven key actions to sustain a greener office. All involve working smarter: 1 Conserve paper make two-sided prints 2 Recycle the paper you use and use sustainable paper 3 Reach for the Energy Star 4 Replace standalone office equipment with multifunction systems 5 Return print/copy cartridges and supplies for recycling 6 Seek office equipment designed for remanufacturing or recycling 7 Scan and send to share documents electronically We sell answers to your needs from hardware right through to paper and media. We are one of the world s largest suppliers of paper. So, we have a strong responsibility to preserve natural resources and make an impact on the environment. Waste not, want not is an old saying that is as true today as it was years before. No one should waste resources our Earth is too precious to us and the generations that follow. Reduce, reuse and recycle are crucial to future generations today. But we are in the paper business, and it takes natural resources to make the product we provide. We should not waste a single tree we should not waste a sheet of paper. Sustainability ensures that we think and act in a responsible manner now and for the future. It is a value we live every day. Simply stated, sustainability can be defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own social, economic and environmental needs worldwide. (Source: Brundtland Commission) Sustainability is an important value and behavior for you and shareholders because: As global citizens we recognize that resources must be protected and used in a manner that depletes them no faster than they can regenerate for future use As consumers of wood-based products, we want to protect both forests and the animals who inhabit them As paper users, we seek options that are safe for the environment while preserving as much of the natural forest resources as possible Responsible Forest Management We are committed to ensuring that from the forest to the mill to your location, we work together to minimize or eliminate waste. Our forests are key to the health of our planet. Knowledge and practice of responsible forest management are crucial to the efficient use of our natural resources. A three-year partnership was formed with The Nature Conservancy, through a $1M (U.S.) grant from the Xerox Foundation to: Provide lasting solutions for environmental sustainability both for us and our suppliers Demonstrate measurable progress in protecting forests Areas of focus: Information support the development of the Canadian Boreal Data Centre Standards improve biodiversity components of international standards Tools and Practices advance conservation planning practices in U.S., Canada, Brazil and Indonesia Education of our suppliers and other forest product users of the knowledge gained from the research 2 3

3 Responsibility and Choice Going Green Doesn t Mean Sacrificing Quality We are committed to offering you a wide range of products that advance sustainability, match your sustainability goals and help you get the right paper for the right application that s just working smart. Our portfolio is one of the widest in the worldwide paper market and includes: We know that all of the technology in the world doesn t help if you can t get paper to run reliably. We are the only supplier to offer everything from hardware to paper and media with our brand backing up the promise. What good is using an environmental product that jams or produces poor image quality? Sustainable Papers for General Use We set strict environmental requirements on ALL our paper suppliers We have achieved Chain of Custody certifications to ensure that whether the paper is from virgin or recycled pulp, it is produced and handled responsibly Recycled Papers We offer you a range of Post Consumer Waste (PCW) options to select, if desired From the start, our hardware is designed with paper in mind. Our devices are developed to run recycled papers reliably every ream, every day Our papers are recyclable and we encourage you to put all of our papers back into the recycle stream Innovative Papers Our Xerox Media and Compatibles Technology Center (MCTC) is dedicated to the highest quality standards for all papers and media we sell. If it has our name, it has the approval of the MCTC. Runability and image quality are assured and if there is a question, our hotline stands by to help. A committed group of paper engineers works with hardware engineers right from the birth of a product to ensure that the paper and media you need runs flawlessly through our machines. We don t simply check paper mill quality standards, we analyze the paper machine to ensure that the paper meets our exacting standards. Whether the paper comes from virgin pulp or recycled material, we maintain the same standards. Because of the MCTC s rigorous commitment to quality, every ream of paper must run flawlessly, producing the best image quality. Recycled papers sometimes present challenges due to the variability of post consumer waste. Our paper engineers meticulously ensure that this variability is minimized so that our recycled paper runs reliably every time, with the highest image quality. Your documents are important. Why invest your time, effort and creativity on anything but the best paper with the highest of environmental standards? Our line of HP replacement cartridges contains up to 90% reused/recycled parts. We build and test them to the same performance specifications as new products. Each year, according to Recharger Magazine, more than 300 million plastic printer cartridges end up dumped in landfills. This is the equivalent weight of 112,463 Volkswagen Beetles. Annually, we keep more than 10 million pounds of cartridges, waste toner and toner containers out of our landfills. Xerox High Yield Business Paper is the first mechanical paper for digital printing applications ideal for transaction printing or general office printing More of the tree goes into the paper 90% vs. 45% Uses fewer chemicals in pulping and bleaching Lighter weight 4 5

4 Certification and Sustainability Understanding Paper Certifications Starting with the source of the fiber used to make the paper, through its manufacture and use, we strive to minimize environmental impact while meeting your exacting business needs. In 2000, we adopted an environmental position on sourcing paper. The position states that our goal is to source paper from companies committed to sound environment, health and safety practices and sound environmental management. In support of this position, we phased in a set of requirements from 2003 to 2005 for all supplying mills. These stringent requirements cover all aspects of papermaking, from forest management to production of finished goods. The requirements are now included in our supplier qualification process, and our existing paper suppliers worldwide must meet these requirements to continue doing business with us. Suppliers must also submit detailed documentation annually, verifying conformance. Key elements required: Commitment to compliance with all applicable environment, health and safety regulatory requirements, including forestry codes of practice and regulations governing legal harvesting of wood. An effective mill environmental manage ment system and objectives for continual improvement in environmental performance above and beyond regulatory compliance. An effective procurement process that: Ensures the exclusion of illegally harvested wood raw materials. Ensures the exclusion of wood raw materials derived from forest areas of significant ecological or cultural importance, unless certified to our accepted sustainable forest management standards. Encourages all suppliers of wood raw materials to practice sustainable forest management. Strict limits on the use of hazardous materials, including exclusion of elemental chlorine, in the processing and content of our papers. These standards enabled us to gain certification by other outside independent groups to ensure that our papers not only meet our high standards, but meet the requirements of these cross-industry governing bodies. Certification is the right thing to do. It ensures that our standards are as high as the industry experts. It gives you the extra assurance that our papers meet the standards of international standards groups. Additionally, there is the assurance that from the forest to your hands the paper has been handled responsibly throughout the Chain of Custody. Forests are managed responsibly: trees are regenerated, wildlife habitats protected, and biodiversity of forestland is respected and maintained. Since only about 7% of the world s forests are certified, the pulp from these forests can be difficult to source. But, we are committed to the assurance that whether the paper is certified, recycled or from non-certified virgin pulp, the highest standards are maintained to protect our natural resources. Chain of Custody Chain of Custody (CoC) is the path taken by the raw materials harvested from a certified forest all the way through processing, production, distribution and printing until it is a final product to be sold to an end customer. We are proud to have earned CoC certification from the following organizations: Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1999, which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests. PEFC is similar to FSC in relation to the end product certification, and is growing in popularity across some regions of Western Europe. PEFC offers customers a badge of sustainability as requested by many end users, as proof of corporately responsible purchasing. Forest Stewardship Council The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international network, which promotes responsible management of the world s forests. It accredits independent third party organizations to FSC standards to ensure well managed forestry. Its trademark provides international recognition to organizations that support the growth of responsible forest management. Over the past 12 years, over 84 million hectares in more than 82 countries have been certified according to FSC standards (covering around 2% of world forests) while several thousands of products are produced using FSC certified wood and carrying the FSC trademark. FSC operates through its network of National Initiatives in 40 countries and is becoming increasingly demanded by customers looking for a sustainable branded paper. The FSC trademark can be displayed on products containing a mix of FSC certified, recycled and controlled fiber. The FSC logo identifies products from well managed forests. It is the global benchmark for responsible forest management. The mark of responsible forestry SW-COC Forest Stewardship Council A.C. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. SFI program participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage and they influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs. This unique commitment to sustainable forestry recognizes that all forest landowners, not just SFI program participants, play a critical role in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our forests. The SFI program is overseen by a multi-stakeholder Board of Directors which is the sole governing body over the SFI Standard and all aspects of the program, including chain of custody certification and labeling, marketing and promotion. In 2007, we were one of the first paper providers to be awarded multi-site certification of all of our paper sales and distribution sites across Europe and North America. 6 7
