1 Revision Date: Examiner: Richard McDonald Legal Description: TN - R0W sections, 2, Compartment Review Presentation Pigeon River Country orest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County ,930 Cheboygan Management Area: Pigeon River Country Identified Planning Goals: Maintain current species mix and apply appropriate management techniques to mature stands of timber that are in need of treatment. Soil and topography: Uplands are generally rolling to mostly level. Soils are predominantly sand of the Cheboygan-Blue Lakes associations with Rubicon sand being represented as well. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: This Compartment and surrounding area is entirely state owned land with recreation being the primary land use. Unique Natural eatures: A representative from Michigan s Natural eatures Inventory will be on hand at the formal compartment review. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural eatures: None identified. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None identified. Watershed and isheries Considerations: A large portion of Cornwall looding, as well as, Cornwall Creek, which flows into the Pigeon River are within this compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: A Wildlife Division representative will be available to participate in the formal compartment review. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium and coarse-textured glacial till. The glacial drift thickness varies between 00 and 400 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Devonian Antrim Shale that is quarried for cement products elsewhere in the State. There are no nearby former gravel pits, but there should be good potential on the uplands. This area was previously leased for oil and gas development. The Antrim Shale subcrops in this area, but appears to be too thin for production. The Niagaran reef trend is located five miles to the southeast. There is limited oil and gas potential for known producing formations in this compartment. Consistent with the objectives of the Concept of Management there are no plans to engage in mining activities (sand, gravel, stone, etc.) or oil and gas development in this Compartment. Nondevelopment (no surface infrastructure including pipelines, new roads, utility lines, well pads, etc.) oil and gas leasing may be considered. Vehicle Access: There is good access in the south end of the compartment, but most of the roads in the north are blocked to vehicle traffic. Survey Needs: None required. Recreational acilities and Opportunities: A maintained access site and boat launch is on the north end of Cornwall looding with an accompanying pit toilet and picnic area. The horse/hiking trail traverses the entire length of the compartment. 06//205 :25:5 PM - Page of 2 DOHMN

2 ire Protection: Access is poor in case of any fire suppression efforts, though the area is generally at low risk to any wildfire potential. Most road systems are closed with berms. Additional Compartment Information: The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments No Limiting actors Proposed Treatments With Limiting actors Details (orested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system 06//205 :25:5 PM - Page 2 of 2 DOHMN

Not concerned with regeneration at this time. Thin stand using Specs: standard hardwood marking guidelines. Identify crop trees and mark to open up the crowns and remove competitors as well as suppressed and diseased trees. Also, identify and maintain cavity/den trees throughout the stand. 15 Pigeon River Country Mgt. Unit Compartment: 6 Year of Entry 20 Report EXISTING SPECIAL CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS * This is a list of SCA's for this compartment along with a /4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to the Special Conservation Area Map for locations of the below listed Conservation Areas. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA HCVA Cold Water Stream Riparian Area Natural Rivers A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by isheries Order 20. A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. There are two Natural Rivers datasets which are derived from spatial buffers set from an established and approved distance from the river centerlines. The Natural Rivers Zoning District is a 400 foot buffer for most Natural Rivers. The Vegetative Buffer ranges from 25 to 00 feet. To view specific Zoning Districts and Vegetative Buffers for each Natural River see the table located on the I:\Documentation\GDSE data folder. 06//205 ::04 PM - Page of
