1 BARAGA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT #28 ENTRY YEAR: 2010 Compartment Acreage: County: Baraga ision Date: 10/17/2007 Stand Examiner: Jason S. Mittlestat Legal Description: Covington Township T47N, R34W, Sections 9, 10,,,,,,, 35 and 36. RMU (if applicable): Management Goals: To maintain a healthy sustainable forest with special consideration to wildlife and fisheries habitat. Soil and Topography: This land is level to rolling. Soils: Upland soils are Champion cobbly silt loams, Michigamme cobbly silt loams, Net gravelly silt loam, and Amasa fine sand. Lowland soils are Carbondale and Tacoosh mucks, Whitbeck fine sandy loam. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: The surrounding lands are a mix of industrial forest and small private landowners. Industrial lands are managed for timber. The small private ownerships are primarily used for recreational purposes. Unique, Natural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): MNFI recognizes the potential for bald eagle, osprey, common loon, great-blue heron rookery, red-shouldered hawk, goshawk, moose, gray wolf and for wood turtle (along riparian edges). Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): none. Special Management Designations or Considerations: BMP guidelines should be followed around the intermittent streams. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: The Net River is within the compartment. The Net River flooding a wildlife impoundment is in the south end of the compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: The Net River Flooding is an impoundment for waterfowl; it should be drawn-down early in the next 10-year period to oxidize accumulated bottom sediments. Consider retention of a buffer of uncut conifers adjacent to ponds and lakes for summer thermoregulatory cover for moose, where possible. Favor mesic conifers (White Pine and Hemlock) and Northern Red Oak. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: none.

2 Vehicle Access: There are forest roads throughout the compartment that connect to the Ford Road to the West and Highway 1 to the East. The roads in the compartment are rough. Some haul roads will have to be either improved or developed. Survey Needs: Some survey work will need to be done for harvest activities. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Boating Access Site No. A-07-0 is located at the Net River Flooding (boat launch ramp, 8 parking spaces, and vault toilet). The area gets some small game, deer hunting and fishing use. Fire Protection: Historically this has not been a fire prone area. Lightening has been the cause of a few fires that have occurred in this area.

Unit Compartment: 028 DNR DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Page 1 of 1 * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. Baraga Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210. SCA Concentrated Recreation Area Facilities that are designed and maintained for routine or heavy recreational use, including State Parks, State Forest campgrounds, motorized and non-motorized trails, trailheads, staging areas and public access sites.
