2 Autonomus Province of Trento Trentino - Alto Adige region, in the heart of the Dolomites (NE Italy) includes the two autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano. 70% of the territory above 1000 m.; More than 50% of the territory is forested. About half million inhabitants; 215 municipalities, many of which are very small sized;

3 PROVINCIAL ENERGY PLAN The Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT) is approving the new Provincial Energy Plan (PEAP). The PEAP involves moving from 28,6% to 35% of energy obtained from renewable sources. Biomass has an important role in order to achieve this objective BAP

4 BAP First measures Action 1: exploit residuals biomass Increased use of harvesting machinery in order to process wood chips and load them on trucks immediately in the harvesting location Action 2: upgrade of small/medium sized biomass fueled heating systems Gradual replacement of existing systems with modern and efficient technologies Action 3: reduce the share of biomass export and redirect it to the new district heating power plants Action 4: realize new biogas plants

7 B&B CASA VIGOLANA Investment: a sustainable building for a new tourist business, collaborating with local professionals, architect and constructors The floor heating system and the domestic hot water is powered by a biomass boiler Reasons: high availability of biomass and the possibility of using it on local scale; the very low environmental impact of Co2 emissions; the low cost of combustible; the high reliability of the systems

8 B&B CASA VIGOLANA Evaluation Low energy consumption (40.8 kwh/m2), optimisation of solar gains, zero CO2 emissions, low energy bills; Local development: all the stages linked to the realisation of this new building have been developed within the rural area and created new incomes for locals; Local biomass: wood comes directly from the forest situated nearby the building; Added value in terms of image: Sustainable Tourism in Mountain Area

9 B&B CASA VIGOLANA APE Award - Competition for sustainable buildings The aim of the competition is the dissemination of good practices about construction of Sustainable Buildings in the province of Trento having the best performance in terms of energy, together with formal characteristics like the architecture and materials used.

10 Hotel Lagorai Hotel Lagorai is an accommodation plant for summer and winter tourism, located into Fiemme Valley It has about 50 rooms, sauna, swimming pool and meeting room and from 2004 it's heated with a boiler fueled by wood chips, produced from local forestry company and sawmills

14 Bioenergy by sawmill waste Public authority: The Magnifica Comunità della Valle di Fiemme The Community protects and enhances the environmental and cultural heritage of the Fiemme Valley and deals with the management of collective property: mountains, forests and pastures. Programmes timber cutting and reforestation and it owns a sawmill with an area of square meters. The sawmill exploits local resources in a sustainable way, creating a successful market and making profitable all the productive cycle components, from raw materials to waste. In this case, the scraps from wood processing are not considered as waste, but an important bioenergy resource: --> Leveraging the woodchips produced by the local sawmill, it is ensured to the biomass district heating plant of the Fiemme Valley a short supply chain, with an environmental, social and economical positive impact

15 Bioenergy by sawmill waste Evaluation In 1997 the Magnifica Comunità della Valle di Fiemme has been certified FSC (Forest Stewardship Council ac) for the entire production cycle: from forest to processing and marketing of wood gathering. Year 2010: 17,000 m3 woodchips supplied to local biomass district heating plants (13,500 m3 to S.Martino plant, 1,000 m3 to Predazzo plant and m3 to Cavalese plant) to complete the local forestal chain

16 Apple trees stumps feeding biomass boiler The cultivation of apple trees in Valle di Non covers an area of about 6,400 hectares and an annual production of 3,000,000 tons, which representing 10% of the apples produced in Italy. In the late nineties appeared in the orchards of the valley a dangerous phytoplasma, responsible for a disease which causes a drastic qualitative decay of apples produced. In 2004 a legislation decided to regulate the extirpation of trees: only in Val di Non the trees which should be replaced correspond approximately to a surface of 1,000 hectares: about 200/300 hectares each year Usually, the stumps of apple trees are not used for biomass and energy purposes but...

17 Apple trees stumps feeding biomass boiler The small municiplity of CLOZ decided to transform this problem in an opportunity: - Constructed a transormation platform - Contract with local enterprise - Direct income: rent of platform and free material to feed the biomass boiler Continuity: the municipality already start to project new activities in order to ensure the continuity of supply. For example: stumps of larch have been collected from agricultural reclamation activities and in the future will incorporate crops residues to ensure the continuity of supply
