Presentation of Suriname 10 may 2011 Quito R. Matai, M, Playfair, C. Sanches

Location: Northeastern coast of South America, 2-6 Northern latitude and Western longitude. Inhabitants: 480,000 Land surface: 164,000 km 2 Population growth : 1%/ year Climate: semi- humid climate influenced by the ITCZ Average annual rainfall: 1,500mm - 2,500mm Main economic activities in the coastal area: agriculture, petroleum production, small industries, In the interior timber production and mining

Major land use Forestry Forest cover: 91% (15 million ha) Protected forest: 13% (2 million ha) Timber production forest: 26% (4 million ha) Agriculture Cropland: ha Shifting cultivation: ha Mining Bauxite Kaolin Gold Petroleum and nonmetallic minerals as Granites

Ins%tu%onal arrangements for GHG inventories Data gathering and compiling the previous inventories on adhoc bases Coordinator prefers to have a permanent committee No specific training on the IPCC Guidelines provided No GHG management system in place Data and results of previous inventories are not archived Lack of awareness of stakeholders Recommendation: Reporting must be backed up by legislation

Preparing for 2 nd na%onal GHG inventory Since the 2 preliminary inventories improvements were made, but there are still many missing data to cope with, especially in the forestry sector The SNC will use the established IPCC methodologies Foreseen technical assistance from USAID/ EPA/CCAD Training in use of inventory software, and developed methodologies to improve the quality of the data derived from the inventory

Plan of ac%on for the SNC Establish the team of experts for performing the GHG Inventory One or more sessions will be organized focused on the IPCC guidelines Identify stakeholders and data providers in an early stage Evaluation of past inventories ; analyses key categories and key sources Organize intermittent workshops to correct/ redirect data collection procedures

Other aspects of 2 nd GHG inventory Include new sources and sinks Improved activity data for ALOFU sector It is expected that improved national data from some sources of emissions, eg. for different forest types, will be derived and incorporated into the estimates

Include new sources and sinks new sources and sinks that might have arisen as a result of development activities within the sectors. A key source analysis will be completed

Improved ac%vity data for Land use change and forestry This will include: the validation of data on the biomass values of the various (predominant) forest types or classes in Suriname, and deforestation rates by forest types.

Data availability for ALOFU sector no official national database for forest land exist,. Information is retrieved form calculations based on the work of NARENA using Landsat TM imagery as source. Information from NARENA is available in the form of GIS maps and paper maps. not sufficient detail; Eg forest types are grouped into large categories, while for cropland distinction between management type is not visible. The Starvision map (a radar based map )which is currently prepared will provide a better picture of forest cover, groundthruthing still have to be done for vegetation type and for cropland. Climate type data is available and is of sufficiently detail for the country. Data on soil type exist in the form of GIS maps and paper maps.

Data availability for ALOFU sector Cropland Management data derives from the latest agricultural census (2008), but not on all aspects. Only general information on Grassland Management exist, but field inventory will be needed to check on data with regard to fertilization, irrigation and grassland condition. Since rice is Suriname s main crop information should be available. No data is available on Grassland Burning. Fire is sometimes used as a management practice but no information exist on return intervals and so on.

Data availability for ALOFU sector data on forest Inventory was up to recently made only for calculation of the volume of the commercial timber and only in areas in production. Currently Suriname is engaged in a project to establish a network of plots throughout the country to perform ground- based measurements of tree biomass, deadwood and biomass, and soil Carbon. For shifting cultivation only data on total area used is available. Information by forest land use subcategory is not available. Data on volume of wood harvested or collected for fuelwood by tree type and % of wood from forestland, deforestation, silivculture, agroforestry, shifting cultivation, settlements is not available to this detail. At present only commercial harvest is registered. No information on subsistence gathering of wood and fuelwood is available.

Data availability for ALOFU sector Import/export data are available on amount of N- containing fertilizers. A leak might exist through the smuggling of fertilizers to the neighboring countries. limestone; mined, imported, exported data are available, but there is no information on the amounts of liming application and dolomite application. The uses for non- soil purposes is not clear.

New ini%a%ves for monitoring of forest carbon Monitoring of changes in forest land Deforestation and reforestation Forest degradation Monitoring of carbon in different vegetation types Reference map for stratification Permanent Sample Plots: remeasurement 4-5 year Destructive plots: harvesting and weighting biomassa Collection of soil samples Components Above ground and Beneath the ground living biomassa Dead wood Litter Soil
