6 CLIMATE CHANGE AND REDUCING DEFORESTATION IN THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON: ESSENTIAL ASPECTS 1- Developed countries: are the LARGEST EMITTERS of greenhouse gases, and therefore, should fulfil OBLIGATIONS to reduce emissions. 2- Mato Grosso/Brazil: has no OBLIGATION to reduce emissions. 3- The Kyoto Protocol (1997) did not take into account deforestation avoidance.

7 RESULTS ACHIEVED In the last three years deforestation in the Amazon has been reduced to 59% which has prevented the emission of 500 million tonnes of carbon gas. This represents 15% of the emissions which should have been prevented by the signatory countries to Annex 1 of the Kyoto Protocolo. Mato Grosso contributed 7.5% of this reduction, which represents 50% of the amount agreed between the countries. Assuming a price of US$5 per tonne of CO 2, this represents US$1,250,000,000, or 416 million dollars a year. Mato Grosso is already the largest contributor in Brazil to greenhouse gas emission avoidance originating from deforestation prevention

8 RESULTS ACHIEVED Mato Grosso has achieved a reduction of 7.5%. That is, 50% of the total agreed upon by the countries; Assuming a price of US$5 per tonne of CO 2, this represents US$1,250,000,000, or 416 million dollars a year. 9 RECOVERY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASSETS Pacts with the farming sector : APROSOJA, SINDALCOOL, ACRIMAT and the Association of Reforestation Companies in order to recover degraded areas and legal reserves; The Creation of FEMAM: The State Environmental Fund The State Reforestation Support Fund - MT FLORESTA: offering annual resources of U$5 million a year for reforestation.

17 ACTION PROPOSALS AND A VIEW OF THE FUTURE THE EXPANSION OF AREAS WITH PLANTED FORESTS Currently there are forest species being planted in 93 municipalities with a total area of thousand hectares, and 23 forest species have been catalogued. The State intends to encourage the expansion of planted forests to ensure the replacement of timber stocks and to reduce pressure on native species.
