International Conference : Rural Space and Local Development, July 2014, Cluj-Napoca, Romania The International Conference Rural Space and Local Development, dedicated to the International Geographical Union (IGU) and organized under the patronage of the Center for Research on Settlements and Urbanism, Faculty of Geography, Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca fosters to create a high level forum designed to broaden the study of rural areas and support regional development. This event has become a beautiful tradition, as confirmed by the five previous conferences (1998, 2001, 2006, 2010 and 2012), conferences dedicated to IGU, bringing together leading experts around the world. Having its past success and scientific impact, conference organizers intend to maintain it active, every two years, focusing on relevant topics with particular emphasis on rural development issues along with regional development. You are invited to represent your organization and enhance our knowledge on issues related to the peripheral rural areas in your country. Papers presented will be published both online and in print in The Journal of Settlements and Spatial Planning, an English edited scientific journal, peer-reviewed and open access, indexed in several important international databases. Inra Nancy-Lorraine research centre is looking for a young scientist The French National Institute for Agricultural Research (Inra) and the Doctoral School RP2E (University of Lorraine) offer during 2014 one "Young Scientist Contract" for 3 years (for completion of a PhD) followed by two years of postdoctoral research abroad. Research will take place at Nancy, France. Candidates may choose among the four topics proposed this year: From leaf to whole plant: morphological, physiological and molecular determinants of transpiration and water use in poplar trees Understanding the molecular dialogues within forest soil microbial communities and investigating their impact on plant health and growth Functional characterization of a chloroplast-targeted candidate effector of the poplar rust pathogenmelampsora larici-populina: could the rust fungus hijack chloroplastic functions to achieve infection? Functional variability of the detoxification system in lignolytic fungi Applications files should be sent to the administration of the Doctoral School (christine.fivet@univ-lorraine.fr) with a copy to the president of Inra Nancy (presid@nancy.inra.fr) before Monday May 12th, A selection committee will examine all applications and will select the candidates for an audition, based on skills and adequation to the selected topic. 4 3. Joensuu Forestry Networking Week (JFNW) 2014: Non-wood products - an opportunity for bioeconomy? European forests and the forest-based sector play an increasingly important role in fostering smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, especially in the context of Europe 2020 Strategy. In the past, this sector has mainly been built around wood based products, while other goods, like nonwood forest products (NWFP) have not played a very prominent role. To unlock its potential the NWFP sector requires knowledge and tools to optimise the sustainable provision and profitability of NWFP and better understanding of the NWFP market potentials and of the role of innovation processes for new products and services. The objective of the JFNW2014 is to provide the participants with a broad and complete understanding of the current situation of the NWFP sector in Europe. Furthermore, through discussions, interaction with stakeholders and working groups the participants will develop recommendations about the actions needed to unlock the potential of the NWFP sector, and making it a significant part the European bio-economy. Targeted participants from various disciplines: young and experienced scientists, professionals, policy makers, decision takers, and other stakeholders. To facilitate an intensive interaction in groupworks and discussions, the participation is limited to total of 30 participants. The organisers have reserved a quota for the advanced students. 5 4. PhD at Irstea the 2014 campaign In 2014, Irstea offers 23 PhD topics. Young Leadership Programme on the Russian Forest Sector Young Leadership Programme on the Russian Forest Sector is a unique opportunity for 20 young professionals with leadership potential to: learn about the emerging opportunities and challenges facing the Russian forest sector advance their interdisciplinary knowledge and explore innovative policies, business futures and emerging societal demands interact with a network of global peers and experts share practical experience through group exercises Programme themes: Global forest governance: issues at stake and the role of Russia Russian forests and the forest sector Sustainable Forest Management: implementing the principles in Russia Forest policy affecting Russian forest sector development Global trends in forest products, markets and trade: the potential of the Russian forest sector Foresight as strategic tool: building futures for the forest-based sector through a practical exercise Field trip The Young Leadership Programme on the Russian Forest Sector runs from December 2014 in Joensuu, Finland. Given the increasing interest to understand the underlying patterns of change and dynamics in motivations when using economic incentives for conservation, we are pleased to invite you to submit an abstract to the forthcoming journal special issue: Crowding-out or crowding-in?
