30th ISTA Seed Symposium 2013 Alison A Powell Seed Symposium Convenor
Symposium theme: Evaluation of seed quality: a key step in exploiting the benefits of plant breeding and genetic conservation
Centre of origin and diversity of several crop plants and many plant species Neolithic settlement of Çatalhöyük, Konya plain Domestication of both crops and animals,7500 to 5700 BC
Wide range of genetic resources from Turkey primitive land races, wild crop relatives, other wild plant species New traits for varietal improvement. Breeding for new varieties of little value if seed quality is not good Conservation of these genetic resources is a major concern Seeds: convenient for storage in ex situ gene banks seed quality must be maintained
Evaluation of seed quality: a key step in exploiting the benefits of plant breeding and genetic conservation
Seed Symposium Five oral sessions (1-5) - Lead presentation by chair of session - 6 oral papers Two poster sessions - Poster session 1: authors of poster for topics in sessions 1 and 2 present at posters for discussion. - Poster session 2: authors of poster for topics in session 3, 4 and 5 present at posters for discussion
Session 1: Role of quality evaluation in seed production Francisco Kryzanowski Worked in Seed Science and Technology since 1972,mainly grain crops specially soybean seeds. Ph.D. degree in Agronomy Seed Science and Technology from Mississippi State University in 1980 and Post Doc in Seed Physiology from University of Florida in President of the Brazilian Association of Seed Technology: Member of Brazilian Working Group to review and update the Brazilian Rules for Testing Seed One of the editors of the Brazilian Seed Vigour Test Handbook.
