FORESTRY CURRICULUM ( ) Paper I (KUF 511) FOREST ECOLOGY AND SILVICULTURE (2+1) Forest ecosystem concept, forest composition and structure, forest population, community dynamics, forest succession, competition and tolerance. Classification of World s forest vegetation and vegetation forms of India. Biomass, productivity and decomposition in forest ecosystems. Silviculture in an ecological context and Concept of regeneration. Ecophysiology of tree growth, effect of radiation, water relationship, temperature and mineral nutrients. Even and uneven-aged systems. Silviculture of important commercial species. Advanced and modern nursery tools & techniques. Practical: Study of forest community structure and its successional status. Natural and artificial regeneration study. Estimation of biomass and productivity of forest floor and litter productsecosystem; trip to different regions of the state to study forest vegetation and collection and preservation of specimen. Paper II (KUF 512) FOREST BIOMETRY (2+1) Forest biometry, measurement of trees and stand, diameter, girth, bark thickness, height, form, volume, crown width and crown length, determination of age and volume of felled as well as standing trees. Increment, forest inventory and sampling procedures. Growth of tree and stand density measures, growth and yield models and their applications. Yield and stand tables. Simulation techniques and modern tools of GPS etc. for measurements.

2 Practical: Diameter and height measurement. Age determination of standing and felled trees. Sampling study and use of GPS in forest inventory. Paper III (KUF 513) ADVANCED FOREST MANAGEMENT (2+0) Principles of forest management, scope and object of forest management, forest organizaton, sustained yield concept, forest rotation and types and concept of normal forest. Site quality evaluation and importance, stand density, classical approaches to yield regulation in forest management- salient features and strategies. Forest valuation and appraisal in regulated forests. Development of forest management in India. Practical: Comments on above topics. Paper IV (KUF 514) WOOD BASED INDUSTRIES (2+0) Introduction, scope and importance of wood based industries in relation to Indian economy; brief description of types of wood based industries in India; pulp and paper industry types of paper and raw material; pulp-mechanical, chemical and semi-chemical; beating, bleaching, sizing and sheet formation; description about rayon and other cellulose derived products. Composite wood-plywood laminated wood, core board, sandwich board, particle board and their manufacturing processes, properties and uses. Principles of destructive distillation of hardwood and softwood; preparation of wood alcohol, acetic acid, acetone, charcoal and allied chemicals. Scarification of wood-chemistry and processes; production of wood molasses, alcohol yeast and other by products from wood hydrolysis and wood substitution. Manufacture of Katha and cutch. Practical: Visit to nearby wood based industries e.g. paper mill, packing industries and other industries present in the area. Paper V (KUF 515). (1+1) REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM Basics of Remote Sensing, Platforms and Sensors, Active and Passive systems. Satellite systems & Images - uses and limitation, elements of data collection and data analysis. Visual and Digital Image Processing, Ground truth, Geo-referencing, Acquisition and interpretation of satellite data for forestry purpose. Elements of Geographic Information System - GIS tools and components. GIS applications; Data and information on forest resources - collection, storage, and analysis. Introduction to GPS and uses. Advantages of Remote Sensing & GIS and future prospects. Softwares used in remote sensing and Geographical information system.

3 Practical: Ground truthing of Satellite Image, GPS data collection, Hands on practice on remote sensing and GIS software. Visual and Digital interpretation of satellite image. Image interpretation and Maps preparation. B. SUPPORTING COURSE Paper VI (KUF 510). COMPUTER APPLICATION AND INFORMATION (1+2) TECHNOLOGY Introduction to computer- characteristics of computer, basic computer organization (input/ output unit, storage unit, ALU, CU, CPU). Number system (binary, octal, hexadecimal number system and conversion). Memory storage- flash drive, memory card (SD/MMC), CD/DVD/ blue ray disk/ HDD. Computer software- system software, application software, free software and firmware. Operating system basic concepts. Application software package- word processing, creating documents, printing, formatting, header and footers, tables, and importing graphics. Data analysis package- SPSS, Statistica etc. Basic use of statistical package, spread sheet, graphs and charts, mathematical functions, averages, correlation and regression. Presentation- creating presentation, auto content wizards, templates and importing multimedia in presentation. Introduction to Information Technology- Network and internet. Basics- elements of communication system, network topologies, network type, wireless network, internet, , and internet protocol (http ftp, telnet). Internet browser(web broser), searching, Google maps, earth and other applications. Practical: Exercise and comments on above topics.
