3 Bunda College Is One of the Constituent Colleges of the University of Malawi: 5 Colleges and Central Office- Chancellor College, Polytechnic, Kamuzu College of Nursing, College of Medicine, Bunda College Was officially incorporated as a constituent College of the University of Malawi to Offer diplomas On Nov 27, 1967
4 Bunda College (cont) Has three Faculties, Agriculture, Development Studies & Environmental Science Faculty of Environmental Sciences has three Departments; Forestry & Horticulture, Natural Resources Management and Aquaculture & Fisheries Science Department
5 Department of Aquaculture & Fisheries Science Dept Was created in However Undergraduate training (diploma and degree in Agric-Aquaculture and Fisheries) started in 1994 when the College was identified as a Centre for Undergraduate Aquaculture Training for the SADC Region
6 Department of Aquaculture & Fisheries Science Dept (cont) Has so far trained more than 150 undergraduate students in Aquaculture and related areas from Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Swaziland, Botswana, Angola, Mozambique
7 Department of Aquaculture & Fisheries Science Dept (cont) Started a Regional MSc Program in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science in 2001 Has so far trained students from Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda, Namibia and Malawi Funding has been available from ICEIDA, two students per year from the region and two from Malawi
8 Department of Aquaculture & Fisheries Science Dept (cont) Has a staff compliment of 12 Academic members of staff: 4 PhDs-Fish Nutrition, Fish Ecology, Fisheries Economics, Fish Biodiversity

12 Regional Aquaculture Networks anchored at Bunda College 1.0 RUFORUM (Regional Universities Forum for Agriculture Research) Bunda College has been identified as a Centre of Excellence to offer PhD for Aquaculture and Fisheries degree for the Network- PhD programme has since been approved by Senate and is to commence this year in August
13 RUFORUM is a Network of 12 Universities with a Secretariat in Uganda success of the PhD Programme depends on the networks with other Institutions within and outside Malawi Moi University Egerton University JKUAT Kenyatta University University of Nairobi Makerere University Bunda College University of Zimbabwe Africa University U. Eduardo Mondlane

NEPAD Southern Africa Network on Science & Technology (SANBIO) Bunda College has been identified as Regional Node for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences for the - 12 NEPAD Southern Africa Countries in Southern Africa-Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Seychelles, RSA, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Developing Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE): Bunda (UNIMA), has a link programme with Bangor, Mzuzu University (in Fisheries) but is to submit a Network proposal on Aquaculture for link with Stirling University, Uganda, Kenya and other Regional Universities

Bunda College has MOU with University of Namibia (on Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences) and sits on Advisory Board of the Fisheries Programme at UNAM
17 Regional Aquaculture Networks anchored at Bunda College (cont) 6. Bunda College Library is a member of the Aquatic Library Information Association (AFRIAMSLIC)- Secretariat in Ghana 7. Bunda College has been requested to host a training on the CTA ASTI (Analysing Agricultural Science and Technology Innovative System) within the NEPAD FISH on Aquaculture and Fisheries in April this year: Participants will come from Nigeria Ghana, RSA, Uganda, and Malawi

23 Regional Aquaculture Networks anchored at Bunda College (cont) 8. Bunda College is planning on hosting a Regional Conference on Inland Fisheries and launch a FISHNET-Southern Africa, an Aquaculture and Fisheries Network to enhance networking and collaborative work within the Region
24 Summary and Conclusions SARNISSA finds a platform on which to build the much needed information flow. The network is not only needed, but timely for the Southern African Sub Region whose uncoordinated efforts have led to underdevelopment of the Aquaculture Sector
