Smart-Holder Design Protected Patented Instruction Manual for North America
Safety Precautions Because a chainsaw is a high-speed, wood-cutting tool special safety precautions must be observed in addition to those that generally apply when working with an axe or hand saw. It is important that you read and understand the owner s manual before using your chainsaw. Nonobservance of the following safety precautions may cause serious or even fatal injury. Read and understand the instructions in the chainsaw manual especially the safety precautions. Always observe local safety regulations, standards and ordinances. If you have never used a chainsaw before, have your dealer show you how to operate the chainsaw or attend a special course of training in chainsaw operation. Do not operate the chainsaw or use the Holder unless you understand the risks associated with use. Minors should not be allowed to use a chainsaw or the Holder. Bystanders, especially children, and animals should not be allowed in the area where the Holder and chainsaw are in use. The operator is responsible for avoiding injury to third parties and damage to their property. You must be in good physical condition and mental health to operate a power tool and not under the influence of any substance (drugs, alcohol) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgment. Clothing and Equipment Wear proper protective clothing and equipment. Clothing must be sturdy and snug-fitting, but allow complete freedom of movement. Wear overalls or jeans with a reinforced cut retardant insert or cut retardant chaps - a safety combination is recommended. Avoid loose-fitting jackets, scarves, neckties, jewelry or anything that could become entangled. Confine long hair (e.g. with a hair net). Wear steel-toed safety boots with non-slip soles. Wear safety glasses and hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs). Wear heavy-duty, non-slip gloves, preferably made of chrome leather. Spikes The Holder s spikes, on the support and spike frame, are very sharp. Handle with care to reduce the risk of injury.
Preparing the Holder Operating Instructions Use the Holder only on flat, firm and level ground. Before starting work, check the condition of the Holder: Properly assembled (wingnuts firmly tightened) No damage Complete Stable Adjusting the spike frame Lay the Holder flat on the ground. Swing the two stays up and secure them to the support frame with two bolts and wingnuts. Check stability of Holder. 1 Swing the support frame up. The spike frame (1) can be set to four heights for cutting logs with a diameter of 1 to 9 inch ( cm)
Swing the spike frame up, pull it out and refit in the required holes. The spike frame has different size holes at either side to ensure correct assembly. The spike frame is correctly adjusted when it is at an angle of 45 with the log in position. 45 If this angle is too flat, there is a risk that the spikes will not engage properly in the wood. If the angle is too steep, the log will not be held securely; it may become unstable and fall.. Fitting the Log Warning! Wood surfaces that are smooth and hard or damp and slippery may slip out of position and fall. To reduce the risk of injury, be particularly careful with wood having these characteristics. If you cannot engage the spikes in the wood, do not use the Holder for cutting. Do not lift logs that are heavier then you can comfortably handle. Lifting excessive weight can cause injury. Slide the wood into the Holder from the long side of the support frame, pushing the spike frame up at the same time Logs longer than 4 feet (1.20 m) 1/4 3/4 Position long logs so that about 1/4 of the log is at the short side and 3/4 at the long side of the support frame. This ensures optimum stability and balance. Never position the log with equal lengths at both sides. Always make sure during cutting work that weight distribution is correct. At least two spikes of the spike frame and two spikes of the support frame must be engaged in the log to ensure it is held firmly in position. Resharpen the spikes if necessary. Dull spikes are difficult to engage in the wood. Logs up to about 4 feet (1.20 m) Slide the wood until it projects about 2 inches (5 cm) beyond the spike frame. Push the spikes firmly into the wood. To do this, press down on the long end of the log.
Always hold the saw firmly with both hands. Place your right hand on the rear handle, even if you are left-handed. To ensure safe control, wrap your fingers tightly around the handles, keeping the handles cradled between your thumb and forefinger. Bumper spike of chainsaw Always engage the bumper spike firmly in the wood for cutting and only cut with the bottom of the guide bar. Do not cut with the top of the guide bar. The moving chain may cause the log to shift and you may lose control of the saw. Begin cutting with the saw at full speed, engage the bumper spike firmly in the wood and then continue cutting. If the chain on the bottom of the bar is pinched, caught or encounters a foreign object in the wood during cutting, the saw may suddenly be pulled forward, towards the log keep the bumper spike firmly engaged at all times. Feed during the cut: Carefully raise the rear handle. Control the saw with the front handle. Use the bumper spike as a pivot. Re-positioning in the cut: Carefully withdraw the saw until the bumper spike is clear of the log. Continue cutting by carefully applying pressure to the front handle. Re-engage the bumper spike. Use the shortest guide bar possible: The chain, guide bar and chain sprocket must match each other and your saw. When cutting Place the log in the Holder as described in the operating instructions. Do not hold the wood. Keep both hands on the chainsaw. The chainsaw is a one-person machine. Never permit another person to hold the wood or the Holder. If the wood or Holder is unstable stop the chainsaw and reposition the wood on the Holder until it is stable. Position the saw so that your body is clear of the cutting attachment when the chain is moving. Take special care when cutting through a log. Hold the saw firmly to control and counteract the feed force. There is an increased risk of accidents because the saw may "drop" at the end of the cut.
Cutting Read and observe the instructions in the chainsaw manual especially the safety precautions. Always position the log towards the vertical support. When you saw, stand on the same side as the vertical support. Push the body of the saw towards the log when you cut. Engage the chainsaw s bumper spike for cutting. Only use the bottom of the bar for cutting. Logs up to about 4 feet (1.20 m) Logs longer than 4 feet (1.20 m) 2 inch (5 cm) Start cutting at the shorter end of the log until the remaining length to the spike frame is at least 2 inches (5 cm) (see illustration). To ensure that the Holder remains stable. Then continue cutting at the long end of the log and check the stability of the Holder after every cut. Cut the longer end of the log and check the stability of the Holder after every cut.
