9 Eastern hemlock, also called Canada hemlock or hemlock spruce, is a slowgrowing long-lived tree which unlike many trees grows well in shade. It may take 250 to 300 years to reach maturity and may live for 800 years or more. 9 9

10 The eastern hemlock extends from northeastern Minnesota and the western onethird of Wisconsin eastward through northern Michigan, south-central Ontario, extreme southern Quebec, through New Brunswick, and all of Nova Scotia. Within the United States the species is found throughout New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and the middle Atlantic states, extending westward from central New Jersey to the Appalachian Mountains, then southward into northern Georgia and Alabama

11 Under ideal growing conditions, seedlings of eastern hemlock develop slowly. First-year seedlings may grow only 1 to 1.5 inches in height and the roots extend less than 0.5 inches into the soil

12 Because early growth of eastern hemlock is so slow, trees less than 1 inch in d.b.h. (diameter at breast height) may be as old as 100 years and 2 to 3 inch saplings may be 200 years old. Growth tends to be slow, mainly because of crowding and overstory suppression. One 10.3 inch tree in a dense stand, for example, was 359 years old. Although many trees may be suppressed for as long as 200 years, they retain good stem form and live crown ratios

13 Mature eastern hemlock trees attain relatively large diameters and height. The record age is reported to be 988 years, largest diameter 84 inches, and maximum height 160 feet

14 Eastern hemlock is the most shade tolerant of all tree species. It can survive with as little as 5 percent of full sunlight, but under severe suppression only partial growth rings form and some may be missing entirely. In one study, from 10 to 40 rings were missing for a 120-year period of suppression. The tree is capable of withstanding suppression for as long as 400 years

15 Snowshoe hares and New England cottontails frequently browse eastern hemlock. Mice, voles, squirrels, and other rodents also feed on seeds and small seedlings. Porcupines occasionally gnaw the bark on larger trees causing serious wounds. (All information from the United States Forest Service) 15 15

23 Though the grain of mustard seed is so small, it contains that same mysterious life principle which produces growth in the loftiest tree. When the mustard seed is cast into the ground, the tiny germ lays hold of every element that God has provided for its nutriment, and it speedily develops a sturdy growth. If you have faith like this, you will lay hold upon God s word, and upon all the helpful agencies He has appointed. Thus your faith will strengthen, and will bring to your aid the power of heaven. The obstacles that are piled by Satan across your path, though apparently as insurmountable as the eternal hills, shall disappear before the demand of faith. Nothing shall be impossible unto you. 26 When the love of Jesus is abiding in the soul, many who are now but withered branches will become as the cedars of Lebanon, whose root is by the great waters. The cedar is noted for the firmness of its roots. Not content to cling to the earth with a few weak fibers, it thrusts its rootlets, like a sturdy wedge, into the cloven rock, and reaches down deeper and deeper for strong holds to grasp. When the tempest grapples with its boughs, that firm-set tree cannot be uprooted. What a goodly cedar might not every follower of Christ become, if he were but rooted and grounded in the truth, firmly united to the Eternal Rock (RH June 20, 1882). {3BC } 26 26
